At some point, in the disorienting desert heat, Shadowpaw had become separated from Wren and her children. Wren had the better nose and so the dark girl quickly lost whatever meager trace of Silvertongue's scent had been left among the barren scrim.
Dusty and dry-mouthed, Shadopaw slumped beneath a plinth of rock and hid in its shade until the sun sank low enough to warrant traveling again. When the dusky sky glowed purple she looked to the stars, prayed to them, and began to travel again... unaware she was headed into the wasp's nest.
