It seemed his resentment, so poorly concealed, urged a protest from the red boy, whose features twisted into a look of dejection. As Nokht watched him, an embarrassed fluster would darken his cheeks, and he would quickly look away. He hadn't meant to offend him, but something within prevented an apology from leaving his lips.
The rocks, the water, the wind. Nokht felt a tingle of envy as he looked into the indigo eyes of Akhre, though the other boy was no stranger to suffering either, he had still found some peace. For that, Nokht was jealous.
He debates his words, his eyes flick to the half-finished fish.
If there was no place they could not reach, then that only meant that the gods were complicit. They watched. They chose not to help.
Maybe Nokht had been a bad believer from the beginning. Even then, he struggled to justify it.
