Machiavelli, known at the time as Hasdrubal, was raised in the Godsmouth cult as their Prophet. To outsiders, it might have looked as though Hasdrubal was the sole leader, however he answered to an older man named Herod, doing as the elder said namely by preforming many rituals and giving aid to those that sought him out— some rituals proved far darker than others.

People aren't either wicked or noble. They're like chef's salads, with good things and bad things chopped and mixed together in a vinaigrette of confusion and conflict.

When Hasdrubal was around 6 months old, his mother disappeared, leading Herod to be his sole figure of authority. He grew to learn that the elder's word was law, and his wish was command—any dissent or rebellion was met with consequence.

I must admit I miss you terribly. The world is too quiet without you nearby.

Around his first birthday, a boy, only a little older than Hasdrubal, and his mother, traveled to Godsmouth. The boy, Juno, was ill and came seeking answers on how he might heal. Hasdrubal found him intriguing at first interaction. The mountain boy with the sweet brown eyes was incredibly kind and optimistic when he out of all had no reason to be. Curiosity eventually sparked into something more as the months passed.

Tragedy struck with Juno's sudden passing, leading to Hasdrubal's arrest. Hasdrubal reunited shortly with his mother in prison, only to loose her as well. After several months, Herod left Godsmouth for an unknown trip. Hasdrubal convinced the guards he had repented, and convinced them to free him, after which he poisoned their meal, and fled, renaming himself Machiavelli.

When someone is crying, of course, the noble thing to do is to comfort them. But if someone is trying to hide their tears, it may also be noble to pretend you do not notice them.

Machiavelli later sought refuge in Muat-Riya, posing as a humble Fellahin. Although he seems to enjoy the work, he still carries himself with the air of one in a much higher station. There is a lingering sense that, if not for his dedication to etiquette and the need to stay safe, his ambitions would be far less hidden.
