Having successfully recruited Ghost for the trip, Sam fell sideways into the moss, legs stiff and eyes unfocused. He said nothing, breathed slowly, and to the casual observer seemed to be having a float-gently-down-the-river-on-an-inflatable-ring sort of mushroom experience.

But Sam saw blood and horror. He saw darkness, and doom, and the world in fire. He saw the Huldra. He became a believer, and he became afraid.

Sam would not speak for days after surfacing. For all intents and purposes, he was the ghost, creeping around the empty forest like a prey animal faced with thr sudden, sentient knowledge of its position in the food chain.
