At Rannoch's suggestion, Liffey weaved a rabbit out of starlight, and he watched her fondly as she sought a sky-bound cottontail. When she found what they had agreed upon, Rannoch followed Liffey's direction. Due to the rabbit's proximity to the stage, he easily discovered the rabbit's contour—and then realized which of their children came next.

Rannoch's heart sank; he missed Remi and Wisp.

Liffey appeared as melancholy as he felt. Rannoch turned to her, noticing the emotion that shimmied in her fire-like eye. He wanted nothing more than to take her pain away, and he leaned over and kissed her cheek. "They should," he agreed, "I think they should be birds—birds who left the nest earlier than anybody ever thought they would."
a crime so old as the sky and bone
he came untied, solid as a stone
all is almost lost and it starts to show
