There was nothing left of her claim. No scent, no bodies. Her children remained with Akashingo while she roamed; not forever, but for now. There was food to spare in the desert and the shelter of the mesa.
But it was not her's. Not the way Zharille felt the lake was her's. Where she had found the strongest men to sire her children, and the place she had willingly fought for. It had been a short battle - and it had ignited something in her. A hunger, a sense of power she would not easily shed.
Winter would be here soon. It would quickly be time to hunt for more men, and she would start here at the lake.

The rocky shore was littered with small patches of ice, an ode to the coming winter. He lounged by the lake, and had been doing so for days it seemed. The lake provided him with the most food he’d eaten in weeks. Water was life, even in the terminal days of autumn, and Sapair would stay by the lake until the food grew scarce or until he grew bored. If he were honest, it probably would be the latter.
But he was comfortable for the moment. His mismatched eyes drifted shut as he rested his head between his paws, and he had begun to doze when footsteps brought him back from the brink of his dreams.
A short distance away stood the largest female he had ever seen. If her scent had not betrayed her gender, Sapair would have guessed that she were male. In any case, she certainly was stronger than he was. He needed to use caution.
Sapair lifted his head and chuffed softly. He lowered his ears, but he did not bother getting up. It was simple to show submission this way.
