Pack Activity
Pack Activity since Burke is a year in BFW and since we want to try out the ranking system! :3 Since the pups are 3 months they are allowed to join and watch! So I'd like to eat in the way the ranks are now. So Burke (and probably pups) then the middle tier followed by the lower. Middle tier it might be handy to state in OOC tags who you are going the challenge? Not sure how this will go. Lets have a test run! :D

@Nemesis @Damien @Cicero @Kove @Mikasi @Venus @Cyn @Pietro

Burke bloodied muzzle was still clamped around the stag's neck. Its legs were kicking and trying to get away. Seeing that it was winter the wolves had the advantage to go after more healthy prey animal and since there were no sick ones and they had all their hunters at their disposal Burke went after the stag of the group. His teeth clamped around even tighter. He trusted that at least one or two pack members would keep Kendra and Pietro from coming to close to kicking legs. One kick could kill them after all.

Once the legs subdued and the blood flowed over his jowls Burke was starting to let go. The pulse was weakened and the stag was most definitely at its end. The alpha male raised his docked tail. The little stump was usually standing up but now it was more to signal to the others to back off from the carcass. They killed it and now it was time for their meal. With a dominant growl he ordered everyone to step away from the meal. He was eating first. He opened the belly. He even corrected Kendra to back off by baring his teeth at her. Yes, they would be allowed to eat with their dad but only when he called them. Since they were his pups Burke wanted them to get the good pieces of meat, plus the soft organs were just the right meat for them to chew. It would give them a good set of manners to have them wait.

The large male took a few bites before calling over Kendra and Pietro. The hole in the carcass was big enough for them to dive into and seek out their pieces of meat. This would be the first time for them eating with the pack. Burke pulled out a bit of the organs so he could reach the other parts like the juicy heart and lungs. His ears listening to his surroundings if anyone even tried to set a step closer.

Pietro watched as his father killed the deer. The blood that ran out made his stomach growl. His father made it clear it was his turn to eat, and no one would step in front. When Burke gave the all clear, Pietro carefully walked forward. His ears still alert of his pack mates and his father. He sniffed it for a moment. It was interesting to see how the animal was killed, and now he was able to eat the dead animal. He watched it from a short distance for a bit, he couldn't quite understand it was dead when he just saw it kicking out at his father. He walked forward and but down softly, making sure it wouldn't move. He then dug his teeth down hard into an exposed price of meat. This was a whole different flavor, fresh and delightful. He kept a safe distance from his sister, he wanted this to himself.

Venus sat and waited politely, the sight of the happy pups made her laugh. She looked to the side to see the darkness of the forest. She wasn't extremely hungry, just a bit peckish. Waiting wouldn't be a problem for her. The sight of the pups made her so happy, pups always made her happy. She didn't know much about what to do or say, it was a bit sad to see Oli missing, but this was a time where the pack should come together. She shook out her fur and waited for the OK from Burke.

Tossing in a quick response, wee. Kove will pretty much just defend himself against anyone who challenges him. Idk if he'll challenge anyone yet, just gonna let it develop naturally.

With winter in full swing, a hunt was welcomed by the Inuit and he looked forward to the meal that would come out of it. He'd flanked the stag during the hunt, his instincts having taken over and driven him to pursue the beast. Parenthood didn't change the male at all, it seemed, for his usual demeanor was still cast away in order to reveal what lied below the surface. The hunter that thrived within all of the Apaata wolves, the drive to kill that which they preyed upon with swift movements and quick actions. When the cervine had been felled, however, he was not given the opportunity to satisfy that which drove his actions. He was not the leader of the hunt, he was not the one chosen to steal the creature's life away from it. That was left to the leader and so, while it was difficult to do, he backed away until the legs of the deer ceased their movements, remaining near the leader's children to keep them from approaching.

When the stag's life force had exited it's body in one final breath, the Inuit remained near enough to get there quickly when his turn to eat came, but far enough so as not to challenge the greyscale man. His legs bent as he laid down on his stomach, silently honouring the life that had been taken before settling his fiery gaze upon the corpse. He watched and waited, eyes occasionally drifting to the side as he stole glances at the rest of the pack. He sought out his son, eventually, a stern glance informing the boy to keep his distance. By then Kove had began to settle, if only slightly, though there remained within him the impulse to tear into the animal. It was in his blood, after all, the need to take down meals necessary for survival. There also lingered, however, the want to approach right after Burke had finished, yet he knew he could not. It was not his place to do so, his rank was not directly below the other's. Thus, he could do nothing but wait; wait and watch as those before him took their turns picking from the carcass.

going to assume @Venus was staying with them! Also Kendra is totally 'challenging' Pietro. xD

Kendra's eyes were wild and pretty eager to take in the sight. She was on the edge of her seat. First she had seen the whole pack run after the deer, chase it and trying to catch it. She had to sit by Miss Venus while she watched the pack hunt, Kendra didn't mind it, it looked intense. Pietro was probably itching to run with them. Once they killed Kendra ran forward with her brother to her father who was holding the deer. She understood now what her father tried to explain earlier. If they wanted to eat the meat they would have the kill the animal so it would move. Kendra was tempted to get closer. Once her father opened the belly the impatient little girl rushed forward.

Kendra had to make an emergency break when her father bared her teeth at her. She hunched down and quickly scurried back to her brother. She sat down next to him, through it was more a half crouch while her tail as going crazy. The moment her father called, which was way too long Kendra rushed forward again. She instantly stood between her father's legs and tried to dive into the carcass. She watched her brother but he backed off from her. It seemed he learned from last time they were eating. Kendra pushed her head inside and started eating. Soon she actually climbed on the deer and ate from there, next to her father. But it was clear that the pup did paid close attention to him once she did get to close for his comfort. Kendra loved the warm and fresh meat. It reminded her of when her father would chew the meat for them. This was way better than the frozen food.

Kendra was at the belly, her pale eyes glancing at Pietro. She was totally going to bare her teeth at him if he was coming to close to her patch of meat! Still this was mostly play for the girl. Het tail was mostly wagging. Each time she did make eye contract with her brother she would bare her teeth at him. At least he was staying away from her, she loved her brother and she had no problem sharing but seeing that Pietro was keeping to himself Kendra displayed more dominant behavior currently.

Unhappy Xan, but hey, what's new?

Xan had not participated in the hunt, both due to age and a disinterest in doing so. He knew not how to hunt in a group, consciously, but could not deny that watching everyone in action had awoken something within him. His father, especially, had him hypnotized, as was usual for his family—not that he knew that, of course. His paws had itched to run towards the deer, to assist in the killing of it, but he'd refrained from doing so. A part of him knew he would only get in the way, and he wasn't about to be the object of everyone's scorn for ruining a hunt. So, with a great deal of focus being needed, he remained back near the other two children. There was distance between himself and them, though, for his encounter with the girl had been unpleasant and he'd yet to meet and form an opinion of the boy.

With the deer killed, the young Inuit wished to move forward and eat. A glance from his father kept him in place, however, but he knew not why he could not approach. In the valley, he'd been permitted to eat whenever he'd pleased, so to be told that he couldn't then was rather confusing. His confusion was taken over by a sliver of annoyance soon after, as he witnessed the younger children being welcomed over to the meal. A look over to his father revealed that he was still not supposed to approach, which set a scowl upon his face. His eyes narrowed in on the twins, ears pressed forwards but legs stiff and still in place. It was another occurrence worthy of revenge being dished out, he'd quickly decided.
I can give it all to you, will you take it all from me
If love is a joke, then use me ruthlessly

Keeping things about challenging Nemesis vague since she hasn't posted, but you can totally assume he's being a dick to her too :P

Although Damien did not consider himself to be "Gamekeeper Material" he really did enjoy hunting. He loved to see the deer fight for their lives, and the feeling of power it gave him to be the one to take a powerful animal's life. Winter was a good season for hunting, especially around Blackfeather Woods' lands where the large prey seemed to get crowded for some reason.

Lately, Damien had been too worried with his own internal dilemmas, which had resulted in Nemesis taking over his place as second. He wasn't happy about that, but he hadn't done anything to change it... Until today. And he was feeling extra arrogant and self-confident.

Damien had been closely by Burke's side during the hunt, but that alone wasn't going to help him get his place back. He'd been holding the stag's head down with his own jaws, and when it stopped fighting back and Burke let go of his grip, Damien did as well, and lingered closely awaiting for the right moment to dive right in The Alpha ate first, ripping the belly open and taking the nutrient-rich organs for himself and the twins. Damien walked in circled behind, baring his teeth at anyone who got too close, and being particularly cocky when he walked by Xan.

The hunt had taken no time at all, though her input had been less than usual. While Burke took the lead, choosing a healthy stag as their victim, she remembered what she had been tasked with. The Alpha's children were now old enough to experiance or more watch closely on a hunt though not mature enough to understand the dangers of the hunt. While being the prey, elk were tough creatures. One kick to the head could easily kill a wolf if one was not carefull. To Kendra and Pietro, she assumed it was all fun and they did not weigh on the consequences of what would happen if they got too close to it's legs. Burke surely wouldn't mind if she held back a bit to watch his children. Afterall, their safety was imperative for Blackfeather's success. All the death and departure took a toll on them as a group and the injury of the young would not soften that wound. Venus seemed to hold back as well, and she couldn't help to feel a little bit threatened by the gesture. Babysitting was her job, not the girl's. She had never called herself overprotect, but she didn't yet trust Venus with the children, afterall Burke had asked her to do it because of his trust in her, and she wasn't about to get pushed out of her own responsibility. Besides, the girl was just sitting there anyways, not really looking after them, her mind told her. A sharp look was sent in Venus's way, though it was heightened by the high emotions enticed by the hunt.

After the life force had been drained from the deer's eyes, she stood back to await her turn to eat. It was common knowledge that the Alpha ate first followed by his kin and so on. Though even Kendra earned a snarl for her hasty readiness to eat, having not been called upon just yet. Nemesis would make no mistake in disrespecting her place. While she was the next rank down from Burke, she knew her position well enough to know that he was her elder and she would eat only when called upon. Her eyes flickered to the impatient Xan as they all stood waiting hungrily for their turn at the blood flowing carcass. She had watched him to as he held back near the babysitting party. Not too close, but close enough for Xan measures. It led her to wonder who needed the watchful eye more, the pups or from what she had learnt, Xan. Kove was present as well, though her attention was not focussed to him just yet, though her mind wavered to who would challenge her that night. Surely Damien hadn't been to happy of the rank switch and she expected no less than a challenge from him if he arrived.

Her tail swayed ever so gingerly, not showing the hunger that ached inside. While her eyes loomed at the open deer, it's insides made her mouth water before she knew it. Though they were a pack and formalities were a necessary, the stakes were high on the adrenaline fueled night. And something told her that the hunt would prove to be more than just a normal hunt at all.

Cyn sat next to Venus and felt a wave of calmness go over her. She wasn't afraid of anyone with Venus around, in fact she had become more alert. She wanted to growl or even snap at anyone who got close. Being herself though, Cyn knew that she wouldn't hurt anybody if they got too close. She hadn't announced to anyone that the two loved each other, but felt as if she couldn't hold it back for long. Her smile was bright and it was easy to see she was happy.

@Kove, Mikasi looking for a challenge(when he takes his share) :P

Mikasi was one to very much enjoy hunting game. The thrill and reward always had the blood pumping for more. So when the pack hunted, he was at their side. With teamwork, it wasn't too much of a challenge to take a beast down. Now came the drama filled part. Dinner time.

The male made sue to stay a respectable distance away from Burke as he ate his share. He wasn't willing to be corrected as his kin had. Instead, he kept a keen eye fixed on the two females: Cyn and Venus. They seemed to be particularly close and protective to one another. For some strange reason, Mikasi didn't like that at all. Maybe it was just the fact that if Cyn wanted his place, Venus could help and visa versa. Or maybe it was the sharp sting of jealousy? He couldn't tell.

Mikasi peered away from the pair and to Kove. Usually soft eyes turned into an impatient glare. The younger male believed that he should be next in line. He was the one who had busted his bones everyday, despite the recent death of a friend, not that the Kove hadn't worked either. Still he believed he should be next in line.

Although the pups needed to grow, it surprised Cicero they would east with Burke, and not at the end of the meal, where they belonged. Cicero did not mind overly much though, even if it surprised him. Cicero knew that Damien would try to challenge @Nemesis most likely, and so Cicero, too, was focused on her.

While Burke and the pups are, Cicero kept his eye on Nemesis, trying to find eye contact while his head was raised and tail twitched tensely. Cicero was not a very dominant wolf by nature, but his desire to be close to Damien surpassed all his other instincts. Cicero sat ready to dig in when Burke was done, his lips passing from his gums in gentle warning towards Nemesis, while he stayed near Damien. He did not communicate much with his brother, as things had been both wonderful and weird at the same time and he had no desire to challenge Damien, anyway; only to be directly under him in rank, too.

ROUND 2! We are working in rounds by the way! So no posting order! :3

Burke was comfortably. He watched Kendra and Pietro by his feet but it seemed the pups themselves had established a way of eating. Damien was clearly trying to display his dominance. Burke observed it briefly. Nemesis didn't really do anything in return to his growls but she might have more attitude later when they had the actual meat at their disposal. He was pleased that she had looked after his young. Burke dove back into the carcass since every seemed to know their place for now. Burke did leave some organs over for the middle rank to fight over, the organs alone were several kilos Burke could not eat alone.

Burke watched if his young were done before stepping back. He nudged them both to step away from the carcass, they had the privilege as the alpha's pups to eat with them but as soon as they were over 6 months that would most definitely change. Now he called off the children since he didn't want to get trampled by the other's feet. The male did rip out a piece of rib rage and dragged it off. With that it was clear that the middle ranks could go up for a feed. Burke laid down nibbling on the broken off piece of the ribcage. He laid more to the side so he could always keep watch and intervene if a challenge turned into a fight. He didn't want anyone injured. Plus having Pietro and Kendra close to him would also be good to learn them about the grooming that happened after a meal. Often couples would do such a thing but as a father he felt that his kids at least needed to learn about such antics. But first Burke was still busying himself with the ribcage between his strong paws.

Pietro was quickly shooed away before the middle rank came in. He followed his sister out to the side. He noticed the glances some were giving each other, and it made him uneasy. Little did he know this was normal, he just wasn't exposed to it very much. He looked over at Kendra and got into a playful position. His butt stayed it the air and the rest of his body swayed down, his paws laid in front. While they waited, might as well have a bit of fun. He tried to avoid getting in the way of his father of pack mates, leaving them to eat in peace.

Venus caught the glance from Nemesis. She let out an almost silent low growl. Cyn had planted herself next to Venus, so Venus gave her a polite, sweet smile. Maybe Kendra would like to learn a small lesson while the lower class waited. Venus would wait to see if Kendra came to her. She really enjoyed teaching the young pup, and the pup was pretty easy to teach. It would also help her learn more about herbs. The questions that the pup gave were pretty good. She waited for the middle tier to dive in. Maybe a challenge wouldn't be so bad.

Kendra had stepped back before her father called them off. She had eaten more than enough for now and was feeling rather lethargic from it. She trotted after her father and settled by his shoulder as the man was still eating. Pietro however was more than interested in playing with her. Her dark fur was wet with blood, yet it wasn't see as in Pietro's coat since hers was darker. Kendra placed her head down on her paws, closing her eyes. She was usually up at night really, and now a nap seemed more than welcome. She looked at Pietro with her pale eyes. "I'm tired," she told him with a yawn. Though seeing the adults squabble was also interesting to see.

It was unsettling how Nemesis reacted to Damien's dominance. He did not underestimate the female, Nemesis was a dark sister and had earned her mark demonstrating her strength and potential, and Damien respected the mark, but the fact that she merely swaying er tail at Damien's threatening attitude made him suspicious. He wanted his spot back, and he had all the paranoid reasons to think she would fight back.

As soon as Burke retreated from the carcass with his last chunk of meat, Damien threw himself right in, baring his teeth at whoever did the same, and particularly keeping a watchful eye on Nemesis's reaction.

If Nemesis reacts I'll probably break the rules and post again this round so that we can get that challenge going! DON'T HOLD BACK!!!!

Cyn could feel two eyes watching her. Mikasi's eye were the ones in particular that she could feel. She was feeling a little brave and looked at him back. Her fur was starting to rise up on end. She was a little sensitive to the eyes and gave him just the smallest of growl she could give.

The female's stomach growled and she had the sudden wanting to eat right then and there. Cyn's eyes shifted from every single wolf she saw. Are they watching? She asked herself.

i'll throw in a two-dogs-fighting-over-a-bone tactic to make things interesting. :P

When Burke retreated from the meat, Damien was first to throw himself right in with a ferocious snarl. Cicero's ears twitched and his attention was drawn from Nemesis, the subtle warning signs that he was sending her gone. His attention was on Damien now, whose feral snarls unlocked something in Cicero. Cicero cast Nemesis one last glance, lips peeled back slightly, before he pushed himself forward towards the meat, right beside Damien. Cicero's tail whipped viciously and a guttoral growl rumbled in his throat, challenging both wolves above him to disagree with his feasting. Aside from his full body language, Cicero did not show signs of aggression, didn't look like he would lunge.

He did not care for fighting. The wolf who ate the most food won; not the one who dealt the most scratches to others. If Damien and Nemesis would fight while he ate, Cicero considered himself the victor over both.

Her attention darted around the group, to Cicero who she hadn't expected such hostility from, to Venus who had wholefully disrespected her, to Mikasi who was now sending angry glares at Kove, to Damien who seemed awfully miffed she had not caught his attention. All the drama made her seem quite uncomfortable, for she wanted to be everywhere at once. What she did not expect was for her to feel hostile to Mikasi who clearly wanted a challenge with Kove. He would not win of course, but she felt protective as she would over anyone else she cared for. She would deal with Venus later, sending her a warning growl right back. She did not like to flaunt her rank but there was a time she would use it to silence those who stepped out of line.

At first, a look of confusion was clear on her face as she turned to Cicero. As far as she knew, he hadn't wanted to move up in the ranks, so she figured something else was motivating him to challenge her as well. Her lip curled up, exposing her teeth that quivered as a low snarl emerged from within. It grew louder as Damien's grew in volume itself. Her tail continued to swish back and forth, but raised in a show of dominance. All muscles had tensed, though she did not make a move to fight. If they wanted one, they could come to her and she would not simply assume that all matters were resolved by fighting. A simple display of dominance would do just fine, as Cicero didn't look like he was going to lunge at the moment. She found that Damien was most likely to use force to retake his rank, so her eyes set trained on him, her body shape growing in size as an intake of breath made her appear to be just a bit bigger than she was.

As she made a move to take take her share of the meal, her peripherals watched every movement from behind her. Damien had jumped at the carcass as soon as Burke had left, leaving her to snarl heavily back at him though her tail did not tuck under, instead did her hair rise, a hostile yet warning look about her. She would have her share, no matter what the brat thought he could claim. Her ears began to quiver downwards yet did not fully flatten, waiting to see his reaction to her defiance.

The moment Burke had given the signal that he was done, the Inuit rose to his feet and moved closer to the carcass. He was not the first to make it there, however, for Damien had been closest and then Nem followed after. While those two made quick work of one another, battling out the order in which they'd eat through shows of dominance, the pallid figured watched as another slipped between them to start chowing down. While he was the eldest of the group, and had been around longer, Kove still believed he'd yet to earn his right to climb any higher in the ranks. Residing at the lowest of the middle tier seemed fitting, for now, and so he was content to just observe the actions between the other three. In spite of that, however, he did not keep his distance from the fallen stag. It was quite the opposite, actually. He'd kept close to it, using his nose to prod around in search of the best place to start—all the while keeping himself out of the battle between the others.

Deciding to settle for that which was closet to him, he sunk his incisors into the back thigh of the creature and, with a swift jerk of his head, pulled back to reach the flesh beneath the hide. It'd taken a couple of tries in order to expand the opening enough for himself, but once the task had been completed he'd began to fill his stomach. A low growl would rumble from deep within his throat any time someone drew too close, no matter who the culprit was. Every once in awhile he would raise his head in order to glance at those within the lower tier, wanting to ensure they were keeping their distance until their turns arrived. Even his son, who had attempted to weasel in beside him, was forced to then back away once more. Kove had needed to do so several times, but once his jaws had snapped shut a mere inch from the younger's nose, the point had been gotten across and Xan had retreated back to his position. He did not expect for anyone to challenge his standing in the pack, but even still, he could not refrain from throwing warning glances towards the others every now and again.

ROUND 3

Burke watched when the other wolves were clearly trying to show their dominance. The alpha male watched with a careful eye. He didn't want injuries but he was also going to let them sort out themselves. The one who was most dominant was the one that was allowed the highest ranks. He had finished his food and decided to groom Pietro first since his coat just looked dirty in general. His big tongue started working over his son's face that was smeared with blood. He wasn't sure if Pietro liked being groomed but he would just have to deal with it. Kendra was up next and Burke was pretty keen on having her close and not sneak off. It was quite difficult to keep an eye on the pack and their politics, and trying to groom two of your children. It was up to the middle ranks to leave the carcass, then the lower ranked wolves could eat. Burke had his share so it was not up to him to signal when meal time was over. He licked with long rougher strokes through his son's fur, being a bit more gentle when he came close to his eyes.

Cicero barely noted the look of surprise on Nemesis' face, registering it vaguely though it was well-hidden (and not unexpected to him). Cicero accepted whichever rank eventually was divided to him by fate; but that did not mean he would not try and fight for it in ways that suited him. Though he did not have an unquenchable thirst for rising in the ranks like Damien did, Cicero knew that he belonged near their top. His display of dominance might not be fruitful if Damien and Nemesis did not stay from the food to fight; Damien was perhaps the only one who could make Cicero win in this instance, for if he decided to physically assault Nemesis he would essentially make them both lose, in Cicero's mind. Nemesis — she was smarter than that, and he saw it in her eyes as all three of them dug into the meat, that she would not stay from the food to fight for a rank that was determined more by how hungry you were at the end of the night than whoever managed to beat the other's face to a bloody mess. Smart girl. Cicero liked that.

And so he did not move to physically assault anyone; instead, he just made sure that he would get his fill while his tail was lifted high, hackles raised, low gutteral growls in his throat. He figured that nothing would change in the ranks between them as things were, and was not sure if Damien would settle for that, but neither did Cicero trust that his brother would be smart enough to realise that Cicero would have free reign over the food if he would assault Nemesis physically to win her rank back for himself.

Eventually Cicero would stop eating, when he had his fill and when he was sure that Damien and Nemesis would not resort to a fight (if they would, he would perhaps rejoin the fray to show his own superiority).

Kendra sat down by her dad, very keenly looking at the other wolves that were at the carcass now. She knew almost the wolves now. She saw her brother Damien and Cicero. She hadn't talked a lot with Cicero but she knew his scent. Nem was there too, and some pale male. Venus was waiting and two others. Her pale eyes fell on the grumpy younger white one. He still looked grumpy. Kendra was of belief that he never smiled, she didn't smile much either, so it bothered her not that much. Still there was something about him.

She turned her head to her brother being washed. A smug smile turned on her lips. She decided to join in and help her father with cleaning her brother. Maybe she would be cleaned too. The dye was slowly coming out of her fur. She kinda liked the red paint through her fur, it made her look different compared to the other black wolves that seemed to live in these woods.

While worrying about Nemesis' defiance, Damien almost missed Cicero's clever move. Damien saw him dive into the carcass, but before he could take a bite Damien growled at him, making sure he knew Damien was still above him no matter how weird or tense the situation was between them, and it would be like that for as long as Damien could hold his ground. But he felt that it would be enough. Cicero had always acknowledged Damien to be above himself since the first interactions as newborns wriggling around next to Meldresi's warm body. But Nemesis, she was one Damien had yet to prove himself superior.

Nemesis was older, and by far more experienced than Damien. She was proving to be firm on her claim, but Damien was arrogant enough to want to keep his position above her. When Nemesis insisted on her challenge, Damien lifted his head from the carcass, warm blood dripping from his chin, and a deep growl rumbling his chest as his tail went up and ears pressed forward. He leveled his head with Nemesis' for a moment, and when he saw the moment fit, he arched his neck defiantly. If the challenge went physical depended purely on Nemesis' next action. If she didn't submit immediately he would snap, and the first thing that was in his line of sight was the female's snout.

Venus looked from Burke, who was now cleaning his pup, back to Nemesis, avoiding eye contact with her. She was teaching Kendra, she wasn't a babysitter. The black pup wanted to learn the way of plants, and Venus could help with that. It was also nice to interact with a pup, teaching was something she turned to enjoy. She brought her head down to her paws as the middle tier ripped at the elk. She respectively waited the lower tiers turn. There seemed to be some tension between a few of them, which made her curious. She looked up to look at Mikasi with a small smile, then turned back quickly to avoid him thinking it was a challenge. She carefully shifted her seating, and wrapped her tail around her legs. She didn't get any closer when she shifted, so the girl was still at a distance.
