They bore down on the target quickly, and as their companions worked to drive the other animals away, Elwood aimed to run near the quarry's left haunch.

He kept enough distance to avoid the buck's hooves as they churned the dirt and grass; rather than jump the gun and try to swerve close in order to snap at its flank, the experienced hunter waited and kept an eye and ear on his hunting partners. It would only take a split second for the real action to get underway.
