Embry was relieved to know that, at least for the time being, his pelt would remain intact. The girl made it clear that, for all the hardship it took, he had passed the trial of the meat. He tried to suppress the well of childish pride that ensued; beaming nonetheless.

She was a good sport, too, which merited her all the more respect from Embry. As she turned to leave, he took one last wiff of the meat's enticing aroma before he tossed it a few yards ahead of the girl. It plopped over her head in a nice arc, and, to Embry, it was his way of thanking her. Today, after all, she had given something far beyond the pleasure of winning; she had granted him a morsel of childhood — and that was something no words could describe.
