...just to feel alive again.

Eech-eech-eech-eech-eech!

A streak of blue-on-black flashed up through the bracken and alighted to a higher branch. He halted midstep, cupped an ear, and lifted his eyes to the sight of the Steller's jay. The deafening shriek was certainly unwelcome company to the hunter, and the contemptably clever creature knew it, too. A flurry of activity a good dozen yards to his left, and the frightened warbles of the grouse as they took to the skies abruptly announced his failed attempt at securing food for himself. He didn't drive blindly after them in a fervid bid to make the best of his blown cover; little point in wasting energy now.

A terse sigh spilled over his tongue as he changed course, and headed deeper into the Grove.

Eech-eech-eech-eech-eech!
As ruthless as it all may seem the wild cares not for the weaker beings.

I am so sorry for the wait!

Rannoch stood ankle-deep in a creek, near Grove's heartlands; all had been still before the Stellar's jay shriek sounded. His head lifted at the sudden sound, water dripping from his chin as he looked in the direction that the noise came from.

Rannoch instantly felt suddenly circumspect. He stood stiffly with his ears pushed forward as he watched expectantly in the direction that the screech had come from. Rannoch didn't know what to expect but, he would keep watch until he was certain he was alone once more.
a crime so old as the sky and bone
he came untied, solid as a stone
all is almost lost and it starts to show
