After a few breathless seconds, the wildlife around them slowly resumed their business. Vega noticed first the chirping of a much smaller bird overhead, and then as her ears turned she became aware of the skittering of a squirrel's paws through the underbrush nearby. Now that the eagle was gone, and presumably satisfied with its catch, the other animals were safe. It was like the creatures had all breathed a collective sigh of relief.

It may not have seemed like much, but it was a moment that Vega would remember going forward. As her mother intended, she would use the cues of others to her advantage. When Hydra beckoned for her children to follow her back home, the only girl fell into step with her brothers; like Atlas, her gaze kept skimming their surroundings, as though she expected the eagle to return.
