The remains could be tanned, if the child wished that of her mother. The owl had seen many things in her time and she wondered what would become of this child, or the gift that was given.

The child looked at her, and together with the owl there was a moment of shared understanding. She knew better than to think this cub held any of the secret knowledge, yet the way their eyes glimmered made her wonder.

She watched the wag of the child's tail for a few beats, and then turned away. In the coming moments her wings spread and she dropped from the branch, sweeping low enough to reach for that tail with her talons if she chose, and then up and away.

So swift and silent, until only the white of her belly feathers could be seen, melding with the bright sky.
