His upbringing was typical; born in a litter of four to a lone mother. Two of his three siblings were killed by various predators; his remaining sister fled deeper into the southeast, and Shardul's mother chased him away once he had reached his proper age.

This enraged the boy, this otherwise natural progression in his adult life, and he has never moved beyond what he saw as a betrayal. Shardul speaks in archaic tone, and may be rather difficult to understand.

He traveled briefly with the three-legged coyote pup, Regipre, whom he had taken as his slave and ward indefinitely.
