Oliver was the runt of his litter, and his life was a little rough growing up. He was often bullied by his siblings and had a strained relationship with his father. In fact, when he wasn't ignoring his son who he often derided as a "weakling and a sissy," Oliver's dad was downright abusive.

His father was your typical "Man's man"; he valued brute strength and raw aggression, traits that Oliver lacks. He lavished praise on Oliver's two brothers for their conformity to his ideals. This constant feeling of inadequacy led to Oliver having low self-esteem and little interest in improving himself since he sees himself as "inherently flawed" and irredeemable.

His mother recognized his intelligence and creativity, and she tried her best to nurture these qualities. When she passed away suddenly, his father took a new mate who did not tolerate him and ostracized him from the pack. Since then, he's been struggling to survive on his own.
