There'd been some changes in the pack: Tierra was gone for now (until she got homesick and came back, anyway, or cried until someone else brought her back again), and there were some new wolves in the pack too. Sphyrapicus hadn't met these newcomers just yet. There were pups, too, although Sphyra was not overly interested in them. Phox had returned too, though he meant little to Sphyra. She didn't know him. She knew that mother cared about him, so that was a something, but she didn't know him.
Meanwhile, Sphyrapicus just kept up her training: patrolling the borders, but also training her body to be stronger. She was young and she was nowhere near adult potential yet, but she wanted to be there so badly and took little time to appreciate her days of youth.
This morning, Sphyra was taking a jog around the territory; with long strokes she trotted through the land by the lakeside, her thoughts on Tierra's disappearance and the newcomers while she surveyed the lands.

the spar with phox had changed something. she couldn't put it into words.
as time went by in the caldera, she felt more at ease— like she and blueberry could make a life of their own here, though they had no say in their arrival. it was freeing to realize that they didn't have to rely only on themselves. that despite the circumstances that brought them to the caldera, they could start anew with the wolves here. they could distance themselves from dysfunction.
although she sought out fights with wild creatures less often, vesper continued to find solace in moving her body. she could run without holding back until her muscles ached and endorphins flooded her system. she could patrol and hunt small game on her own when she didn't feel like company.
it was one of her better days today, relatively speaking, but she found the routine of walking the territory's edges and reinforcing markers to be something that grounded her. she was just taking a break to drink from the lakeshore when a figure moved towards her in an easy gait, and the darkling paused to watch her approach with orange eyes a mirror of phox's.

Sphyra was wrapped up in her own world and as she trotted along the sides of the lake, she didn't notice the other wolf until she was rather close. Honestly, Sphyra didn't really feel like interacting with these wolves. They were probably just a bunch of babies like Killdeer and Caracal, anyway!
The young guardian barked in a curt — and somewhat cold — greeting towards the wolf drinking at the lake's edge, but she did continue her training, leaving it up to the other whether she'd join or not.

the other merely barked a cold greeting, continuing with her jog. vesper gave a nod of acknowledgement, then shrugged before returning to her drink— it was no sweat off her back if they didn't want to stop and talk. but she remembered caracal speaking of his sisters, and how one of them liked to spar. she hazarded a guess that this was the one, if she was taking physical training so seriously.
curious, and buoyed by today's rare optimism, vesper peeled away from the shore as sphyra had passed some meters ahead. as she began to sprint to catch up, she offered a bark of her own— neutral, not begging a stop, but merely signaling that she was on her way to join the day's run.

At first it looked like one of the new kids would just keep drinking, and Sphyra continued her jog. She was happy enough to keep jogging on her own, really, although another wolf could pose a challenge. Most didn't, unfortunately, which left Sphyra longing for wolves that she could actually test her mettle against. Especially now that Sapsucker was gone.
One of Sphyrapicus' ears tilted back when she heard the bark behind her. A small smile twitched at her lips momentarily, though she didn't show it to Vesper. Sphyra did not slow down, though she did glance over her shoulder to see if Vesper managed to catch up. Sphyra herself wasn't going at full speed — she was training for endurance — so she expected Vesper to do a sprint to catch up, or stay lagging behind, perhaps. Sphyra didn't know how sociable the other was yet.
