 the unhappy meadowlark

after encountering the crab queen she had started to go towards the more grassy areas. she was not a big fan of the ocean nor was she too keen on the creature with snapping pincers. those things hurt. instead she found herself in a a vast field of wildflowers, the sight caused the breath to catch in her throat for a few moments before she began to run.

the child relished the feel of grass tickling at her belly, adored the sight of flowers in bloom but her paws halted. her head tilted as a soft yip came from her lips, one of surprise and curiosity. it was not the foliage that caused her to stop moving, it was not the thoughts of feeling lost and lonely either. instead she found herself staring at a little bird perched on a bolder, she was not use to seeing these feathered creatures on the ground. he was pretty too. she remembered Shepard calling one of these creatures a meadowlark but she had only seen them in trees or in the sky, not on a bolder that allowed her to touch him with her nose.

and that is what she did, the yellow breasted was facing away from her and giving a high-pitched song just when she pressed her nose very gently into his feathers. oh man, that earned her a stern talking to by a little feathered thing's standard but he did not fly away. instead he turned and began to chirp at her in rapid secession, she lowered her head in apology as she looked over the tiny bird. man, he was just too cute.

Cadeau had been sleeping soundly atop some rocks, shielded from sunlight and wind when she heard something push through her unconscious mind. It reminded her of a pin being pressed slowly into a rubber ball, causing it to pop. Cadeau lifted her head and bleary eyed looked about. It seemed it wasn't her traveling companion, unless he sprouted feathers that was, she would have been very concerned for Illidan if that was the case.

But no, he was in the cave with her asleep still. Cadeau didnt bother disturbing him, instead got to her paws and arched her spine in a stretch much like a feline. Cadeau let curiosity get the best of her as she shimmied down from her sleeping spot, leaping to stand on the grass below. She wrinkled her nose as she took in a deep sniff, sneezing at pollen. In the mess of wild flower she picked up the scent of another wolf.

Narrowing her brown eyes, Cadeau took off at a weary trot to go investigate if the stranger was friend or foe being so close to them. Cadeau saw the source of what woke her not far away, a bird perched on a boulder scolding a yearling who seemed around Cadeau's age. Blinking slowly, she looked behind her out of habit as if expecting Illidan to show up to support her in this moment.

I've been depending on him too much these days, Cadeau thought with a scoff. Socialising alone shouldn't leave her this nervous, she was a big girl who could stand on her own four paws. Cadeau took a breath in and approached the female wolf, pushing through the grass until she was a respectable distance from her.

"That's a unique way of hunting birds,"  Cadeau quipped to her, cocking her head. Maybe its a wolf thing to approach prey like that, hmm. I'll have to ask Illidan about it.

oh my, he was really upset with her touching him. She wondered if it was because he was afraid she would eat him or the fact that she had startled him. chirp, chirp, chirp. his aggravated song caused his earth spotted wings to ruffle, effectively puffing him up into a rather adorable ball of feathers. though she was unhappy with the fact she had scared the little creature, she could not help but press her nose into his chest once more. "ouch! she yelped as his beak pecked down on her sensitive nose, if she had to guess, the little puff ball was proud of himself for backing her off but his chirps soon became loud once more when another canine came into play.
that's a unique way of hunting birds.

her eyes flickered to the dark brown girl with a diamond marking, her head tilted in confusion. hunt, birds? that was a thing? she had never seen anyone hunt one of these flying creatures, she shared meals with much bigger ones before but never ate one of them. "no, no, no. I would not hunt him!" she exclaimed sweetly as her tail began to wag fiercely behind her, "he's too pretty!" as if understanding her the yellow breasted lark smoothed out his feathers before streaking out his little wings in a display before tucking them back at his side.

the child beamed at the bird as if to say, see! pretty!

Cadeau couldn't help but twist her face up into a wince when the bird pecked at the girl. The comedic timing was on point, really. She pinned her ears at its loud chirping, lucky for the critter she was respectful and wasn't exactly hungry anyhow. Cadeau huffed a breath out, coming closer to examine the two. "He's too mouthy to eat, you mean. I think I'd get serious indigestion scarfing him down, rowdy thing he is."

Cadeau looked from the wolf to the bird, knowing without a doubt the female was hardly a threat that needed to be dispatched. Or more like the girl herself needed threats dispatched for her own safety with how trusting those eyes were and how she kept letting that bird poke her one. Oh boy.

If she needed proof other than Illidan that all wolves weren't the uncultured beasts her peers told her of, this stranger was more than enough. She seemed harmless.

"Yeah... uh, maybe you should step back a little bit? He pecked you pretty good," Cadeau cautioned, waving a paw absently as she stared at the beady eyed colorful bird.
