He left amidst a string of whimpers and scrambled over the opening to the north. Akazia watched him in case it was an act, waiting until he was gone before her form relaxed. Pain could be felt now that he was gone, both in her haunch and in her ear. Akazia walked back to the tree slowly, feeling her exhaustion hit her like the weight of a boulder.
"Jay, you can come out now. It's safe." The mother assured, laying down by the tree, knowing her daughter would want to clean the wound on her ear. The yearling came wriggling out, clambering onto her mother and licking away the blood. Akazia licked what she could reach of her daughter, an effort to calm her after seeing the fight.
Once Jaida seemed satisfied with the cleanliness of her freshest wound, Akazia nudged her to lay back down. Resting her head over the child's back, Akazia lay down to rest as well. "Sleep. Tomorrow we'll find food before moving on again, the blood will attract others." With that, Akazia fell into a light sleep that could be awoken by the smallest sound.

You can break my soul, beat me, hurt me, kill me. But for the love of God, don't touch her.
