Sirius was glad to see her smiling again, his tongue bathing her scarred cheek until she posed a question he hadn't actually considered before threatening to leave. Automatically, his mind fled to his birth mother, and his sister and his twin who he desperately wanted to see again. He thought of his tall and dark father, who surely had plenty to to teach him, and he thought of that little family who hadn't been allowed to come with him. The boy swallowed thickly, feeling rather than knowing that none of this was the right thing to say to her.

"Oh... well, I dunno, mama," he fibbed after a long while, with a small, sheepish shrug. "I was just messin' around..." he murmured, burying his face into the ruff of her fox-furred nape so that he didn't have to meet her eye and show her that he was lying.
