The muddying of his thoughts was enough to fluster him; Dirge broke through her relaxed hold to bound for snow again, shaking the toussled hairs of his coat back into place.

Other than the unsteady pound of his heart away in his chest, he beamed like a not-so-bright boy would after figuring out a puzzle. He'd charmed the snake enough to get away; his tail waved as his grin turned smug smirk—as soon as she rose to meet him it would be his turn to barrel off through the woods.
