There was another little life in the grotto, and Ephraim hated it with the fervent heat of five thousand suns. Every peep the squalling babe made set his nerves tingling and each time his eyes fell on him, his flesh felt seared. Had he only been a little older, a little more of a wild carnivore than a downy babe, there would be no other child. Alas, he was still just a young thing himself, scarcely capable of anything so heinous. But every chance he got, when Caiaphas wasn't watching closely or when he was hidden from view by his other siblings, he tried to hurt the pup; sat on him, shoved him, nipped him too hard with sharp little teeth. He was almost always caught and punished, which only served to fuel him. Caiaphas was his mom.
When he wasn't bullying Svalinn, he was out on the beach, watching the clouds float by and lazing around as per usual. He put more energy into rejecting the new arrival than he did anything else in his life. He was just heading out that way, fast on his paws in the impatient manner of children, when he came around the corner and tripped right over Steele. He was way too tiny to have done any damage to the dark adult wolf, but he fell gracelessly on his face over the newcomer's side.
"Hey!" the indignant hybrid squawked, rounding on the sleeping adult, though there was really nothing he could do or say to Steele. He was too small, his vocabulary too limited. Instead, he glared.
