Whenever one of the boys got close enough to reach out, the little creature would cry out in despair or swiftly duck away to evade them. So just as they'd managed to herd it into a place where they might have a better chance of pouncing it, the clashing of nearby foliage distracted them enough to allow their prey to escape.
