Aningan still wasn’t sure exactly what he was doing. He had challenged the previous leader out of spite—that male wasn’t Caiaphas and therefore wasn’t fit to lead. But now there he was at the helm, confused and only barely adjusting to the changes. All he really wanted was for the sea queen to return and take her role back, that way he wouldn’t have to pretend to know what he’s doing for much longer.

For the first time in what felt like ages, the northerner found himself out beyond the pack’s claim—barely, really, but still a decent distance from the strand. Being away from those he was most familiar with made his hackles stand on end with uncertainty. Was it even okay for him to wander away? Was he allowed to? Not knowing the answer to his own questions, Aningan stuck as close to the pack’s land as he could, just in case, without being so close that he saw nothing new. But the longer he walked, the more uneasy he felt—there was something not quite right about the field, although he couldn’t figure out exactly what that was. And as he continued, he remained on edge, cautious of that which wasn’t truly there.
