The last couple of months had passed in a blur for the man. The death of his wife extinguishing the light in his life and smothering his very will to live. Siarut spent very little time away from his den, except for his daily excursion along his favourite section of the border. But today something was different. There was no particular reason why the day itself was not exceptionally special. Perhaps the sun had risen just right, or the breeze had been just the right temperature upon awakening. In essence, Siarut couldn’t understand it, but he had the urge to walk. In the middle of the night, on the cusp of winter. Not that the cold bothered him.

So he rose slowly, almost stiffly, and ventured down toward the stream. He watched the water trickle by, but found he wasn’t thirsty in the slightest. With a weary sigh, Siarut followed his gut once again. Wandering off, grass skimming his paws.

What he didn’t expect was the sight of his son, head tilted back, olive green gaze fixed on the stars above. A small smile tugged his lips, and Siarut approached slowly, silently. As he grew closer his smile leveled out, shame shadowed his features. He hadn’t been the father they deserved, the father he had wanted to be. Even as his anxiety threatened to choke him, Siarut tilted his own green eyes on the sky above. ”Your mother used to love the stars.” The sentence would probably be just as shocking to Kallik as it was Siarut. He didn’t speak of her much, and his children knew better than to ask. But, for some reason, this night, the northern patriarch had dropped his guard.
