the wail freezes his blood and steals his breath from his lungs. his head snaps up like a soldier's to attention, ears cupping forth and he is off, careening in the direction his daughters cry had arisen from.

he does not know yet how to tell the difference between simply upset and danger and frightened and so assumes they all mean the latter.

cardinal, he croons to her rushing forward; gaze scouring for any sign of danger. he finds none, but his hackles remain bristled as he moves to draw her close to his chest. feeling that knot of tension within it lessening when she is within the safety of his embrace. what's wrong darling girl?
