Sam remained where he was, flat against the ground, very much not challenging anyone's authority or really acting like a wolf at all. He was a slug. A beached jellyfish awaiting the end. Two sad brown eyes swivelled to look at the stranger.
"Good," he said, exhaling hard enough to disturb the sand. If the sea took him away, at least he would be washed clean of humiliation. "You're very red. Like a squirrel." Sam went on, without moving a muscle or changing his tone of voice.
