It had been weeks since Diane had been seen within the pack territory, her scent leading out across the borders with not a peep about where she was going. Heartbroken, the black wolf could only assume his companion had left, scared off perhaps by his proposal she become their beta female. She had abandoned them, like Jhala had before, but this time the abandonment stung terribly and the missing wolf was indeed missed. Imagine the ridge leader's devastation then, to find that he had lost not one companion, but two.

That morning, the scent of bear and blood had drawn him to the mauled carcass of his beta male, savaged by the same bear that had charged him and Taggarik before. His heart had split in two that dawn, and his mournful howl had rung out from it, serenading the ridge in his pained song. It had called Capriccio to him, who sat by his side and consoled him. The pair talked for many hours, until the sun had done its time in the sky and had begun to sink again.

In the blink of an eye it seemed their pack had become no more than a few, when once their ranks had been filled. They had not enough to defend the ridge, and not enough to comfortable provide for and protect any pups he may had sired upon his mate. Both of their hearts had been broken on the peaks of this place, and they had decided they would leave it, and seek their future upon some other claim, and gather more to join them on their way.

Taggarik summoned the last of his wolves to him that evening, told them of what had happened, and invited them along if they wished to come; but he freed them of any obligation to follow him. Then, as the sun rose once more the following morning, what remained of the Porcupine Ridge pack departed the territory and were gone.
