She’s picked up and immediately she slumps in the other’s grasp but her mouth opens to cry while nothing comes out. The cut on the back of her neck has opened and closed repeatedly over the last few days, since the coyote plucked her from her own den, and tore off with her into the night. Kove’s carrying expanded it, torn at her flesh no matter how gentle, and now each time she’s picked up from one place to another, she flinches at the upcoming pain.

Soon enough she’s set back on the ground and her limbs flail, gripping with her soft nails into the dirt while the new wolf inspects her and the other wolf continues to talk. Her ears, still droopy most of the time, swivel a little when the new, cool nose touches her. She relaxes, or tires, into a blob of a puppy when she can’t find the energy to fight back.
