The pair were on the trail of two hares traveling with one another. Not knowing the ways of other animals Howl wasn't sure if it were because they were family or if they were mates. Nonetheless Steph was following one while Howl seemed to be following the other.

It meant that he staye realatively close to her but veared to the side from time to time. He made sure to keep his nose to the groud but also his eyes up. Knowing were they were heading was one thing, but making sure not to get too close unexpectedly was another. 

Then he saw them. Taking little hops with one another. He stopped in his tracks, hoping that Steph would notice the cancelation of his steady pace beside her. Once the two were stopped her gestured for her to take the first move. This was his way of getting to know her and so he didn't mind not actually catching anything. He also wanted to make her happy.
