she decided not to sleep anymore. at least, she decided to sleep as infrequently as she could get away with. she still wasn't used to being on her own and these weeks away from her family had developed a deep insecurity within the yearling. it had been her choice to disperse and at the time it had felt right to her. but nightmares plagued her. gnashing teeth and yellow eyes in the dark, always chasing. hunting. hollyhocks knew it was irrational. she was a wolf! what would possibly hunt her? an elk?
but always there had been others at her periphery. she had taken it for granted but their numbers had made her feel safe and confident. that was the point of this, though, wasn't it? to discover who hollyhocks was when she was alone.
she pressed on through the wood, a thin and nondescript wolf. there was nothing remarkable about her, except that she was perhaps a bit large for a female. her golden eyes searched for something, but for what, she wasn't sure.
