Near the southern tip of the hollow, Surma has taken a spot where the stone of mountain comes together between the spire and mountain. The moon hangs high in the sky, illuminating his little clearing enough to see the remnants of a fox, nearly picked clean to the bone, and a few torn apart and chewed on in boredom. The burning in his chest has long died down since his last encountered and his days since have been filled with solitude, save for his current silenced companion.

An overhang from the spire covers a portion of his little nook and with the moon and stars shining bright upon him, he tucks himself away. Surma rests in only a half-sleep; his ears standing erect upon his head and his breathing falls even, able to detect the slightest disturbance on the wind. He cannot remember the last peaceful night of sleep and it is only nights like these in his slumbering stupor that he can avoid the nightmare that haunts him from one day to the next.

A week had passed since Kaori’s departure, and several since Airi had gone missing. Thoughts of them weighed heavily on her mind, whilst the beating of her heart had seemed to intensify with worry ever since they’d gone away. She could not search for them, could not abandon her tribe. All she could do was hope that they were alright, and believe that no harm could ever befall her girls. If she could maintain a positive way of thinking, perhaps everything would end just fine—this she wanted to rely on, but could not. In the night, whilst little light reached the cavern’s floor, Asterr made her way out through the entrance and over the mountains. From ridge to ridge she trekked, searching for any signs that might settle her, as well as any hints of battles that may have taken place.

Without realizing it, the dragoness found herself descending down into the hollow, her emotions unchanged. She hadn’t found anything that might confirm the deaths of her daughters, nor had she discovered anything to tell her that they were still safe. With a sigh, she proceeded to travel south, contemplating whether or not she might venture as far as the flatlands.

Even with spring on their doorstep, there is still a chill in the air. It isn't enough to bite through his thinning winter coat, but as the wind slows against him and the stone wall, he's reminded of says past. The winter had taken a toll in the teekon, something he is mostly unaware of, but the chill of his north eastern home is enough of a distant memory that he clings to the thought of spring. With it, however, brings a scent he has not been expecting. His travels have mostly been unmotivated, existing from one place to the next that he did not, and still does not, notice the land around him and just how familiar it should be.

Surma bites his tongue, grinding his teeth together to keep from moving. His breathing becomes quick and erratic and his claws dig until the ground beneath him. He thinks, briefly, of the innocent girl he held beneath him and the anger it caused within him, that as his mind hints at another memory that recreates the same fire within him. The large wolf does not move. He keeps back in the shadows of the stone above him, dark eyes focusing on the moonlight in the distance. A silhouette disrupts the gentle hall from the sky and illuminates for a shadow on the ground. She does not see him, nor does she notice his scent. He keeps still to further steady himself a statue on the ground. Surma remains unsure of what he should do in the face of an ache in his chest, waiting until it is too late for her.

Each step taken led her nearer to answers that, in all honesty, she wasn’t entirely sure if she wanted. She had to convince herself that knowing was better than not in order to keep her legs moving forward, rather than turning tail and retreating back towards the lair. It was as a scent wrapped itself around her nose that she was given a whole new reason to keep moving forward. She knew not if it was simply her mind playing on her a trick, and couldn’t be bothered to care. Asterr stopped only after having spotted a dark mass, the face barely able to be seen through the night. Growing still, she stared, expression unreadable.

Her mouth opened, a warning of words to come, but then shut long before anything could escape. He had vanished from her lair, disappeared whilst wounded and then thought to have perished. Yet, there he seemed to be, alive and well enough to have survived alone; she could only assume that he was unaccompanied by another wolf, for no other shapes or scents could be detected. Raising a forelimb, she intended to take another step towards him but stopped herself just as she had prevented her mouth from spilling words. And though she could not speak, her eyes screamed why?why had he fled before, but, more importantly, why was he back?

After several minutes, he can hear the crunch of her footsteps on the cold ground. They are even and unaware and a small part of him wants it to stay that way. That she will not notice his presence at all and keep going. If he had known his proximity was close enough that he may run into her, he would have chosen somewhere else to go.

Instead, the air changes dramatically. The way she takes her next few steps are not smooth rhythm they had been in a moment prior and eventually the stop. She knows.

Surma sucks in a long breath to try and keep himself in place but the gentle place of her paw, a step not closer or farther, and he unhinges his limbs and picks up his head. At first, he does not look at her. His eyes hardened, without the life they’d once had, but it has been gone for months. Very briefly, he thinks of Tavi and the hurt in his heart then, but he shoves it down as he slowly turns to look at the dark figure several yards away. He growls, low and threatening should she take a step closer, and does not allow it to fade. With the lift of his lips and warning of his teeth, the sound renews and carries across the space between them.

She hadn’t known what to expect from him, not then or ever. She could only stare whilst her mind worked to figure out what she could say, though a part of doubted that she would receive answers no matter how she spoke. A growl broke the silence and she stepped back, distrustful. She should have gone in a different direction, perhaps directly to the lake, rather than assuming that she might better pick up on traces of her children in the mountains. Had she done so, she never would have seen the man, but she had and so she needed to deal with her consequences of her mistake. Her concern had lured her straight into danger, which she watched with a mixture of dread and confusion in her eyes. She had messed up in the past but had hoped that treating his wounds prior to his leaving would have evened that out—now that she had been given the chance to meet him again, she became aware of the fact that her care hadn’t changed anything.

Again, her mouth opened, but what she should have said never came out. Instead, the first words to leave her mouth were, Stop it.” She knew not what had driven her to speak, when she knew, in the back of her mind, that he would never listen. He had never listened before, so why would he now? The smartest thing she could do was leave, return to her home where she was protected by the cavern’s walls, but, of course, she did the opposite. She could not let herself leave without receiving an answer, and so she went on to ask, “Why did you leave?” It had not made sense to her at the time, and it still didn't.

Stop it.

If anything, the intensity of the growl elevates. There had been a time where he would do her bidding and he'd oblige without a care. It had been easy then. He had a family. He had a life. Now, there is nothing but the sour hatred that fuels him and pushes him from one day to the next.

He'd be completely content to never having run into her again. The fire that develops, spurning the world around him, had been enough to keep her on his mind more than he'd ever wanted to or admit. It is likely the only thing that had driven him further south when the last thing he wanted was to be near the lair and the life he left behind only to fall into the death he's meant to lead. His lips curl in a deafening snarl, reminding him who he is now. Surma unravels his limbs as snakes that reveal the way he goes now. The moon brightens his full form and the fresh, pink scar glimmers beneath its shine from wounds that she would have never treated. Scars cover beneath his thick fur that had grown in but those curtesy of his father will continue to be a reminder for years to come.

The question falls upon deaf ears when he does not respond or even entertain the idea of giving her an answer, when all he wants is for her blood to spill. She flashes between the woman he though he cared about to a whore he does not recognize, to a fraction of his father. Surma barks, bellowing his pained wrath while his legs move reduce their distance. Separated only by a few feet, he snaps his teeth at her in warning but knows she will not move, will barely even flinch, but he presses on with a few more steps and deals one final warning in her face.

The noise grew louder, forcing her ears to lay flat against her skull whilst the voice within her head insisted that she leave. It was not Draco’s, but a variation of her own, which left it without any chance at being listened to. If the dragon himself wasn’t frightened, didn’t want for her to leave, then perhaps she would be okay. His word had always been what she relied on, though she questioned him now, for it had been because of him that she’d accepted Ukko in the past; Draco had failed her just that once, however, and so she could not act against him given just how many more times he had saved her. So for as long as he assured her that she'd be fine, she decided that she would remain there, even as doing so became difficult.

With the moon’s glow overhead, she caught sight of his scar, which seemed to be a warning all by itself. Still, she refused to run and hide, having chosen instead to hold her ground. The snapping of teeth in her direction made her body stiffen, but otherwise remain still and unwavering—a mistake, she soon realized. The distance between them was further lessened and, before she’d an opportunity to react, she’d felt teeth pinch her nose. A yelp slipped out passed her lips as she backpedaled, replacing the distance that had been stolen away. The feeling awoke the dragon, causing for him to brush up against her conscious, rubbing himself across it as if he were a cat. For the first time, she was afraid. For her own safety, as well as the risk of her losing control; the latter scared her more, for even though it was all in her head, she had grown to believe it to be real.

Steadying herself, she glanced sideways in either direction, her head stilled as she sought out an escape route. Eventually, her eyes settled back on the male, widened and fearful, but without panic. “Leave my mountains,” she forced out, driven by a surge of bravery—or perhaps it was stupidity.

It surprises him just as much as her when he yelps from his teeth connecting with the end of her nose. He does not pull away or jump but his eyes widen in surprise that he’s able to hide away before she gathers herself again. He does not pull away with fur or blood between his teeth, which is disappointing, but it is enough to stir something in her. She becomes defensive and solid, trying to reel back from the sudden flash of pain on her face with a flattening of her ears and steadying look in her eyes. Her words, leave my mountains, form an uncharacteristic bubble of laughter.

The darkness in his features fades away as he laughs in mock humor, though it only laughs a few seconds.

He steels himself once more, zeroing in on her form that hasn’t bounced back or tried to find a way out. “Your commands do not work on me,” he tells her with a curve of his lips. He had tried, long ago, to break the control she had on him but it wasn’t until he abandoned the lair that he was able to be free. “You do not come here of all places and try to tell me what to do.” His growl, low and lingering through the whole ordeal, begins to rise as he takes another step. There are more words that fill the back of his throat, threatening to spill over, and his eyes lazily looked to the side of her cheek near her ear where it droops down to her neck. He knows if he opens his mouth to say them, to tell her everything he wants to tell her, it will only all come out at once in the form of surging for her throat in one fluid movement.

The order went unanswered, responded to with laughter alone. She could feel her stomach twisting from the fear she’d since swallowed, urging her to flee, though she knew that she could not. The lair was her home, the mountains hers to protect, and it seemed as if the latter was in danger. His presence alone disturbed her, the wolf she saw no longer the one that had followed her home so long ago. He was a threat now, and she wanted nothing more than for him to leave—the mountains, the Wilds, and perhaps even this life. She could have run, she could have left him there, but her need to defend that which she felt belonged to her prevented her from doing so. Not only that but the reminder that two of her children were not home kept her there, too, the thought that he might find them deeply unsettling—terrifying, even.

As he took a step towards her, she took one backwards, away from him. The pull of the dragon, his quest to gain control, nearly became something that she could ignore no longer. A part of her wished to give in, to grant him the power that he so desired and hope that, with his strength, she would be able to protect both herself and her home. She considered it but knew that she could not throw away all of the time spent in her youth training to control the beast. She had learned to restrain him, to accept him as he was, and so she could not abandon her place above him.

With a hesitant step forward, she forced both her ears and tail upwards, careful to cover her fear with a thin veil of neutrality. To display even the slightest traces of dominance towards anyone had always left her feeling uncomfortable, but she pushed passed the unease to better focus on what she was trying to accomplish. “You will leave these mountains,” repeated the vessel, voice unwavering. “You told me once that your father was a terrible man and that you did not want to be like him—but you have become him. You do not belong here, you are no longer capable of maintaining the peace.” So often had she given others the benefit of the doubt, but now, as she stared at the man, she could not imagine that the Ukko she once knew still existed within him.

She retreats back when he presses forward but it does not last long. Her ears and head are up and she takes a step closer. The distance between them only shortens as he does not back down, staring hard into hers. He does not fear her, does not entertain the idea of packing down. The shards of the boy Asterr had found so many months ago had been left behind, pulled apart by the dark woman for her own selfish use and gain. She'd pick what she wanted and all she left was Ukko's shell.

The mention of his father sends a new spark through him. His chest puffs out even more and his growl roils and turns sour. Surma snorts his amusement that she even brought up the deceased.

"My father never lied to me," he told her, tightening his jaw. His tongue flicks behind his teeth, eager to taste her. "You told me I would not become him but it was just another lie. You did this." She lied to him from the beginning and he'd never been quiet about his upset, staying in her tribe until he'd felt something snap and break off. The remnants of the boy she thinks she rescued died those months ago. The children he'd stayed for sickened him to think about, knowing they are just as much of a lie as she is. Any loved he'd stowed away in reserve for them died out the night of their birth. She'd built their family upon a fallacy and when he fell, he had no where to land.

Surma's nose wrinkles, accentuating the scar on his face. The phantom of hurt in the motion causes him to hold it longer as his teeth promise pain in the pale moonlight.

"You are afraid," he purrs and takes another step forward to test his theory.

Onto her, the blame fell, though she refused to accept it. She had spoken neither a lie nor the truth, but had simply remained silent; perhaps that was worse than either. He was not hers to control and he had never been, she could not bend his will to fit with her own. All that he had done, every thought that he’d had and moves he’d made, had been his own doing and she would not accept any responsibility for it. “I told you that you would never become him for as long as you did not wish to,” she stated, set in her ways. “I am not the cause of this. You chose to leave, you chose to become your father—you can blame only yourself.” She could not bring herself to shoulder the blame, to accept his words as if they were the truth. She had done so too many times before, but could not any longer.

The glint of teeth made her muscles tense further, and his step forward sent her backwards. She had hoped to hold her ground, to remain still and move not even an inch back, but she’d failed. Her body had acted on its own, driven by the need to protect itself. “I would be a fool to not fear a beast,” she threw out, coming to terms at last with the terror that she felt. She could recall no other points in her life during which she’d felt true fear, aside from the present. When raised to believe yourself to be invincible, it becomes difficult to be terrified of anything, but Ukko had succeeded in making her blood run cold.

“Back away,” she ordered, suddenly feeling trapped. Like a caged bird, she sought freedom but found it to be unobtainable. Even with her knowledge of the mountains, she doubted how capable she’d be at outrunning him. In theory, she need only get close enough to her home to summon her tribe, but even that path felt like one she could not cross. There was quite some distance between the hollow and her home, plenty of ridges and loose earth; her options were limited to stay and fight or flee and risk angering him even more than he already was—either way, there was a risk of death.

She tries to skirt out of the blame. It’s reminiscent of before when she did not take the blame, refused to see why he holds such anger. It can be traced back farther than Asterr and all the way to his roots, but it unraveled bit by bit and she’d taken the last few pieces he had left and thrown them to the wind. He’d been raw and opened only to finally harden his core. With his shell gone, there is nothing left to protect the outside world from what is left.

“Why don’t you see it?” he growls, watching her retreat again. Her display of dominance is thrown aside and fuels him, makes him bigger. “I didn’t have much when you found me and what I did have, you took from me. You did not care what happened to me.”

Back away.

Her attempts to get him to back down only amuse him, finding a game within her words. The girl he’d taken a few days ago had caved to his will without fight but this was different. She allowed him to release his anger but it had not been enough, it had only been the floodgates opening. “I am the only thing left of my father,” he tells her with another step back, expecting her to react as the opposite magnet with and equal amount of distance of her retreat. Surma does not wait for her response, tired of hearing her words, tired of hearing her excuses. The brute closes the distance in less than a second with open jaws, finally getting the need he’d craved all along.

More blame was pushed onto her, none of which she could accept. She could not agree with him, could not confirm that she’d never cared because, at some point, she had. As far as she was concerned, whatever might have been taken from him had then been given back, and then some. In various forms, yes, but she had given him all that she had been able to. And yet, despite that, she continued to be blamed for that which was either out of her control or could no longer be changed. “I gave you everything,” she managed to get out, her words forced. Perhaps silence would have been better, but she could no better stop her words than he could rid himself of his anger. “I gave you a home. I gave you my children, a family. I gave you power, but nothing was ever enough for you.” With her fear, there came anger of her own, fueled by betrayal; his, as well as all of those that had come and gone before him.

At first, his words hadn’t been understood. It’d taken her a moment to realize what he meant, but she’d not been given an opportunity to reply. There was another step, sending her backwards, but it wasn’t enough. She’d hardly the chance to blink before the distance between them was lost entirely, his body colliding with hers. Along with a yelp, the air from her lungs was pushed out passed her lips, leaving her winded and stunned. Her body was thrown to the ground by the force of the impact, then pinned there by the male’s mass. Squeezing her eyes shut, she tried to curl in on herself, a whimper slinking up and out of her throat.

He can't stand to listen to her anymore. She'd exhaust her reasoning before he even would want to consider the notion. All he wants to do now is shut her up and so as he makes his impact, she's on the ground with nothing more than a whimper to offer him. He moves as if he might take her flesh and tear, biting where she's left exposed, but he bores holes through her cowering form. His breathing is ragged as he hovers above her, willing his frustration outward but something keeps him still. Not even his muscle are tense from agitated and adrenaline.

"You are lucky," he murmurs, slowly picking up one of his front feet to carefully backpedal and untangled himself from her. Surma gives her one final look without any further explanation and he puts distance between them. His frustrations have long been worked out and seeing her crumple so easily beneath is enough for him to know. He knows his strength is greater and if he wanted to, he'd overpower her just as quickly. The dark male slinks back into the shadow the back of the spire gives him.

Teeth connected with flesh and, for a moment, her breathing stopped. Trapped in her throat, it could find no escape until after her release. She had expected something more, something that would allow her to return home and find someone to take the man’s life, but there were only words. A statement, short and direct, that left her with questions. She stared after his retreating form as she picked her own up from the ground, steadying herself and resisting the urge to shake out her coat. Silver eyes were forced to linger on the male, trailing after him as he became one with the shadows. Why…?” her voice trailed off and her mouth shut, preventing the escape of any other words. Shaking her head, the dragoness retreated several steps, further distancing herself from the wolf.

Without another word, she continued to watch him, waiting for any signs of movement. Despite the attack, she wished him away, still, and refused to leave until her mountains were cleansed of his being.

He hears her voice close to him and he realizes she’s gotten up and followed after him a way. The words sit heavy on his tongue and he reminds himself it had been Asterr but his memory doesn’t allow him to replace the young woman’s pale fur for something darker. His legs slow to a stop near the spot he’d been resting a moment prior and he circles once, plopping down on the ground without a care in the world. Wherever he chooses to lay, he is king of, and right now the wench is more of a bother than entertainment.

“I want nothing with your mountains,” he tells her instead though somewhere in the back of his mind, it won’t be enough for her.

The question that she’d intended to ask was never completed, and so it never received an answer. Still, it was present within the back of her mind, influenced more so by need than true curiosity—but it remained unasked, lacking the strength to transform into actual words. In fact, it seemed as if few of her thoughts had the capability to turn themselves into sentences, her mind far more focused on watching than it was speaking. The way in which he laid across the earth, his body pressed against her mountains, kept hold of her gaze. She could not look away, nor did she want to, her body held in place by various things—the need to protect her home, her worries over what he might do, and so on.

His voice broke the silence, the anger that his words created encouraging her to speak. “If you do not want them, then leave,” said the vessel, her tone nearing the edge of a command. “Leave my mountains now and never return.” A soul as vile as his, no longer accepted by Draco, did not deserve to set foot onto the range. It belonged to her, despite what others might believe, and she could not leave him to drag his loathsome self through her domain.

Even though Surma has taken to the ground and gotten comfortable, putting his chin on his paws and closing his eyes—for there is nothing here to fear—he can tell she has not gone. She won’t be satisfied until he leaves and that alone anchors him to the ground. He isn’t all that close to the lair, on the outskirts of the hollow as he’s passing through, he curses the fact he’s graced with this night dealing with the one woman he doesn’t want to see.

But, deep down, he knows he’s wanted to see her this whole time.

He tenses as she gives him command and he snorts in amusement. He licks at his lips and his eyes flicker open briefly before returning to rest. It would be easy to pick up and go but he’s far more amused in the ire he’s created simply by existing, even if there’s nothing left inside. “I’m going to sleep,” he tells her with one eye opening for reaction but, regardless of what it is, he closes it and returns statuesque. “Feel free to keep me company.”

Each demand uttered passed by unanswered, his body having yet to move from the patch of earth he’d laid across. Her features, usually kind and calm, contorted with frustration, not the least bit amused by his decision. His blasé attitude contributed to her annoyance, the intensity of it forcing her tail to lash about once or twice whilst she watched him. As soon as he finished speaking, she turned and walked several paces off, then righted herself and settled down near to the trunk of a tree. Silver eyes found their way back to him, watching and waiting—with a great deal of uncharacteristic impatience—for him to leave. There she would stay throughout the entire night, too, should he continue to refuse to move along.
