Pulling herself onto her paws, the russet wolfess stepped carefully over her snoozing cubs and reached out to bump her ginger snout to the tufted charcoal fur of the puppy's backside as he made to peer outside. She rumbled softly to him, ears canted back slightly as she shot him a sharp look - the time to venture beyond the den would come, but it would not be until they were old enough to know better.

Lifting her proud head, Durnehviir spotted a pack-mate resting in the sunlight beyond her den. At once, her hackles pricked along her dorsal and she stared at him for some time as she tried to decipher his intention. She recognised him to be a comrade of Chusi, one who had not wronged her in anyway, and her muscles slackened slightly. Some uncertainty remained: she did not know this male well, and her immediate thought was that she did not feel comfortable introducing her offspring to him.

The Queen offered no words, but reached out a dainty forepaw to hook around her child's chest and pull him beneath her.
