Her howl caused his blood to run cold. A frown furrowed at the brows of the shadowrunner, and he paused in his steps, trying to discern the meaning of his mate’s mournful note. She called to their children, but there was no answer—it caused his own heart to begin to thunder in his chest and his mouth to go dry.
 
No sooner did he begin to quicken his pace in the direction he had determined his mate was, her flame-kissed fur came to view. Pale eyes were wide with worry, and the lashing he expected from her tongue was lost when he saw the her form noticeably slacken, as if the fire had escaped her very being. It was not something he had witnessed in her before, not something he ever wanted to again.

He stared at her, blinking. Where, he wanted to ask, but he didn’t. If she had known, she would be dragging the youth back to his home and family. To those that loved him. But did he even know that, when his family was so broken? “I’ll gather the pack. We’ll find him.” He ignored the pit in his stomach that felt as if a stone roiled within. He wanted to press forward, to reassure her, and he took a hesitant step, but moved no further—she had not accepted his presence for months now. The loss of their son because of their ridiculous argument was not likely to change that.
