At first he wasn't sure what the guy would do. Maybe they'd get in to it (maybe he was nervous about a fight because of Firefly's many scars, that would've been an ego boost to Ambrose back in the good old days), maybe this would lead to further trouble for the little family on the beach -- but in the end the stranger chose to leave, not getting what he wanted out of the beach's latest resident. Unless this was exactly what he wanted - a reason to report back to their commander about their increasing numbers.

The wolf said something about piss, and then murmured a sound that Firefly didn't understand (it sort of sounded like he was saying later, like a farewell, but in slang terms); and beat a hasty retreat the way he had come. It was Firefly's turn to follow and impede, which he did despite his limp. He kept up pretty well but did not insert himself in the way of the other wolf, preferring to act as a close escort.

Yeah, sure, just.. One last thing, no, he wouldn't stop him, but he'd talk and try to get his own point across even if it was futile to attempt. Don't you think this is a waste of your time? The trail eventually led through the cliffs and once they hit those, he'd be unable to follow so closely, which left him with this last ditch effort to try and make some sense out of the situation.
