Going to the dog park was always a big issue for Ro; maybe that's why the human woman had taken him this far from the cities? The wild was different. There were many smells and tastes and pretty things, but very few others like him. He thought he could smell them sometimes — these wild dogs — but his instinct was to avoid, not stick around or investigate when he came across the fleeting scents. There were no human smells out here and so he was lost in an unfamiliar, alienating landscape.

The crashing of the bushes made the boy stop sharply. He stood as if pointing; tail up, with a curious twitch. One paw raised, head level with his shoulders — and out of the mess of green plants and grey shadows came a giant of a dog. Its coat was grey like freshly poured cement and reminded Rohirrim of the bossy big dog that lived down the street from his people.

He was instantly nervous, and curious, and confused. She moved without making much noise after that, and he watched her with his big dark eyes as wide as they could be, licking at his lips as he felt his anxiety spike. He wanted to make himself as small as possible, or run, but didn't know where to go so he stayed put and merely stared.
