All Welcome
a full day had yet to pass before abeja began to feel restless. there was no task delegated to her, no job she was meant to complete. but to leave the borders and find one for herself, it felt too risky. she was caught in a sort of limbo, unsure of what to do to bide her time.

when meeting vengeance, abeja had promised him a mercenary. to keep herself moving, should anyone walk by, she decided to head to the border for a morning patrol.

the girl finds herself to be spending greater amounts of time on the border; the famine makes loners and coyotes bold, and she is not one to squander a potential resource. every fight betters her, as Black Hat had promised, and distracts from the growing doubts. she seems to have reached the point where her upward momentum has slowed to a stop, and her growth seems concentrated on filling out.

her isolation does not go long unbroken. the woman she stumbles upon is a stranger, though obviously a packmate. closing quickly the distance between them and moving to fall into step at her side, the melonii traces her gaze over the woman. "who are you?" not a threat to her, as she was certainly much older. but it would not be long until she entered the adult ranks, and the girl was careful in her analysis of all those that made up the bulk of the pack.

border patrols were easier when done with company. the members of this pack seemed generally unpleasant, so she was not taken aback by the girl's greeting. abeja, the scout replied, a smile tugging at her lips, who are you? a sound in the distance perked her interest, though it was quickly blamed on the winter winds.

you come to patrol, too? the words were accented, though careful in delivery. abeja did not want to come off as cold or friendly, but preferred to be found somewhere in between. while awaiting the girl's response, she stopped to rub against an aging tree trunk.

"hela," came her answer, moving slightly ahead of the woman to examine a newly fallen tree, sniffing at it briefly before moving to mark it, too. she glances back as abeja asks what she's doing here; this she deigns to answer only with a nod.

she watches to woman a moment longer. "why'd you join us?" some of the members might remain somewhat of a mystery to the whelp, but she preferred to know as much as possible about those more recent recruits.

trying to wrap so i can retire this one.

abeja liked her name and thought that it might be worth remembering. she smirked, continuing to move along their path. i needed a pack, laughed the sylph. the faint scent of coyote on the wind stopped her, though only for a brief moment.

to be a rogue, one must be able to move silently, without leaving a trail. the easiest way to do that is to join a pack that doesn't care about its members whereabouts. turning her attention back to hela, she continued, let us patrol in silence.

the woman's proposition sounds good enough to her. she allows herself to drift further away from the woman, somewhat unimpressed and seeing little reason to keep close. she continues to mark as she goes, occasionally moving out to investigate a fleeting scent or glimpse of movement. eventually, the woman vanishes from view, and the girl veers back into the heart of the territory.
