she had been here once before, when the moons were still bitter and frozen. then, she had still been so angry — perhaps she still was — but that rage had turned cold, hardening and sinking down deep in the pit of her stomach. she had wanted a fight when she had last come to these shores, but not with the wolves of the area; when they had come, she retreated. it was the leviathans of the deep she had taken issue with. hurt me, she had wanted, hurt me because at least that means you still care.

but she knew better. the sea may love her daughters, the nereides, but she was a cold and indifferent mother. particularly to those she cast out.

auk did not know what compelled her to return to this place. perhaps because, all those months ago, there had been wolves here that smelled of the sea. she hadn't been ready, then. now, it may be the closest thing to returning to her homeland — a homeland that would never welcome her back into its fold. she paced the shore, restless as ever.
