they had known this land no longer than a handful of days; it was no surprise they knew little of it. they had no direction in mind when they wandered; viorel did not think they would outpace the winter, only that it might fade. that they would keep themselves busy in the meantime.

they did not take pleasure in the things they had once taken pleasure in. when they hunted -- as they did now -- it was out of necessity, and viorel felt nothing but the cold in the rabbit they had captured, in the leanness of its ribs. how long before it might have starved?

it was not pleasure; of that much they were certain. death had a feeling to it nonetheless. behind the safe blankness of their expression, viorel warmed themselves around it as though it was a flame.

and then, leaving behind the scattered bones, they kept walking. to gather such things was, now, a waste, no matter their curiosities. someday that might yet be different.
