If she was going to do this, she decided, she needed a good co-parent.

Someone who wished for children of their own, but wasn’t some spry young creature. She wanted experience, even if they had never had a litter under their wing. An older person. That would be good.

She picked her way from the willows up into the mountains, circling towards the top of the caldera of a long inactive volcano. Her tail swayed from side to side at her hocks, looking over the edge of the rock towards the rest of the mountain beneath her. Her violet eyes swiveled to her surroundings, keeping an eye on everything that so much as twitched.
