If the cliffs and crags were too dangerous, then the pups could simply stay within them. Instead of the threat of falling down the mountainside, they could be protected by the walls of the caldera. Amon had not ventured in to the heart yet. He assumed many of the wolves in this pack had - it was the main component of their territory after all. Clearly Amon needed to get out more.
It would be protected from all sides, and the cliffs would stop being a danger that way. Or we could explore around the lake - it's pretty darn big, but there is sure to be a safe area around it somewhere.
