He is small and thin as most poor boys are. A pelt of dusty browns that fade into a lighter off white. Scarlet dusts his back and coils around his neck. His weary eyes are a sharp yellow.

son to Rodolfo Gardel and Liliana Gardel

brother to Constanzo Gardel, Gustavo Gabriel Gardel, Ercole Gardel, and Davide Gardel

meant to wed Lucio Beschi

Gabriele was born into a society split in two; nobles who lived on the plentiful mountainsides, and the commoners who worked in the desolate fields below. It was in those fields where Gabriele’s parents — Liliana and Rodolfo — resided.
The couple had lived in poverty their entire lives. Rodolfo had always strived for a greater life of riches, and at the point of their marriage he saw children as a key to that golden gate. It was a daughter that he wanted in particular, that way he could marry her off to one of the noble families. But Liliana only bore sons for the years that followed, each of which was sent to the hunting grounds as soon as they were old enough.
It was not until her third litter that Liliana birthed a child that wasn’t a boy. But the pup was not the daughter Rodolfo would have hoped for either. Gabriele was intersex; an anomaly in the village. He passed as female and thus raised as such as his father commanded.
Gabriele had a poor relationship with the majority of his family. His father was indifferent towards him on good days and ill tempered on the others. He saw Gabriele as a tool to get rich and nothing more. His eldest brother hated him from the start and would bully him whenever he came home from his hunts. His littermates who had been just as indifferent towards him as their father, took to tormenting him as well. It only got worse when Gabriele’s voice began to drop.
Gabriele had a better relationship with his mother, who he’d spend most of his days with. Being the only child that wasn’t sent away to work, Liliana doted upon her son. He appreciated her love but was often discomforted by her instance of referring to him as her daughter. The lessons to “cure” his rapidly decreasing voice only added to his insecurities. He said nothing of it though, and dismissed his feelings whenever he could.
Of his entire family Gabriele adored Gustavo the most. The only boy of Liliana’s second pregnancy, sent to the hunting grounds just as his brothers before him. Whenever he’d return home he’d take Gabriele on hunting lessons, which served as great bonding time for the pair. It was during these outings when Gabriele was truly happy.
His parents despised the brother’s hunting trips. They were “not fit for a lady” as they described them dozens upon dozens of times. When Liliana’s scolding didn’t work on Gustavo and Rodolfo’s beatings were unsuccessful, the pair decided it was time to send Gabriele to the mountainside to take rigorous classes in astrology, medicine, and opera with the noble children. It would keep him away from Gustavo and make him more appealing to future suitors. Gabriele was devastated by the news and begged his parents to let him stay, but it was to no avail. He was sent to live at a boarding house at the age of eight months.
Gabriele hated living on the mountain more than living in the fields. His professors would constantly berate him. His studies would constantly leave him exhausted. His peers were no better than his brothers in terms of their tormenting. Their pompous attitudes and negative views on the common folk made him despise them even more.
Despite his hatred towards his new life and the urge to flee from it, he did his best to adapt and excel beyond his classmates. He’d grown tired of the constant teasing and made it his goal to earn respect through knowledge and skill. He succeeded to an extent, soaring to the top of his class and being able to perform in the royal opera houses. Even then Gabriele would still hear his peers whispering harshly of his gender identity. The gossip never ceased.
The only solace he found was with Gustavo. He paid visits at the base of the mountain. Though they were less frequent as time went on, Gabriele always appreciated them. But their conversations grew more brief and awkward with each visit. Gustavo still kept his high spirits while Gabriele’s slowly withered away. They’d grown apart. Too far, Gustavo had told him during their last meeting. Gabriele had changed too much, he said, and was hardly different from the nobles he despised.
His brother’s last words followed by his absence sent Gabriele into a spiraling depressive state. Around that same time he’d been betrothed to a nobleman by the name of Lucio. Lucio brought him no joy. Gabriele believed he was too dull just as everything in his life had become. He couldn’t stand to live on that mountain any longer and fled towards Teekon Wilds on his wedding day.
