"Baaaaaat," Kiwi called out for her sister, but she had already vanished, wandering off in some unknown direction as Kiwi had disractedly chased a chipmunk into its burrow. She tilted an ear and heard nothing. Oh well, she could explore just as well on her own!
The sound of rushing water drew her towards it, and when she saw the gorge, she froze, her eyes widening. It had taken a good deal of walking, but it was immediately worth it. She'd never seen anything like this place, and immediately traipsed towards the edge, captivated by the sound and sight of the water flowing below and the steep walls beyond. Instinct kept her paws firmly planted, but she stuck her nose over the edge, peering down. "Woooooah" she yelled, and most of the sound was lost to the rapids below. This was so neat!
Dusk was beginning to fall, and a firefly lit up by her nose. She snapped at it, then cavorted back, giggling and chasing the insects about.

Bruges wasn't terribly pleased with the idea of simply mucking about for a month while his brother, he assumed, would try to win their bet- but in the end, he figured there'd be enough for him to to for 30 days until he needed to go back and see if Ambrose had been able to acheive anything whilst Bruges dodged his half of the bet completely. Find a pack and get a trade? Ridiculous. Like he wanted to settle down- but at least Ambrose had believed that he'd do it. In the meantime, he had lots of spare time on his hands, and absolutely no committiments.
...And Bruges knew a committment when he saw one. And as soon as he caugh sight of the dark brown pup- probably four or five months old, he'd guess- playing by itself near a gorge, he knew he'd stepped into something he would likely later regret. He considered walking away- but then again, though he didn't particularly want the responsibility of taking care of a pup, he couldn't exactly walk away and let it totter over a freaking cliff. He huffed a sigh, and approached, laughing softly when he saw her snap at a firefly.
"Y'know, if you eat enough of those, your belly will glow," He said, giving the pup a wink. He glanced about- it didn't appear as though she had an escort, which made him slightly nervous- if one showed up and he was there, they might think he had bad intentions. All he wanted to do, though, was get the darn pup further away from the edge of the gorge.

Kiwi was too caught up in the game to notice the stranger's approach, snapping at the bugs with wild abandon. More than a few times the game led her far closer to the edge than she should have come, and as the shadows lengthened, visibility dropped.
So the soft laugh came as a surprise, and Kiwi immediately startled backwards, whirling about to face it. The move brought her somewhat closer to the chasm... he was standing off, but at least she wasn't cornered by it. And luckily the fright hadn't come when she was so close as to slip over.
She recovered as he joked, and her stare turned into more of a glower, eyeing him mistrustfully. Kiwi didn't much like strangers.
"Who're you?!" She asked, his comment and the game set aside under the much more important fact that she didn't know this dude and therefore wanted pretty much nothing to do with him.

Bruges froze when the pup startled, the movement inching her slightly closer to the gorge, which was the exact opposite of his intention. His ears turned back slightly, in an apology, for startling her. He lowered her head when she snapped a demand at him, willing to defer easily to the young girl, in hopes that he might convince her to move away from the gorge, and allow him to get her back to her pack. She didn't look as though she trusted him, but at least he had a fair amount of faith in his own appearance- of all male wolves, though Bruges was exceptionally tall, he had a clean, kind and collected countenance.
"I'm Bruges; it's okay, kiddo- I'm not going to hurt you, or anything like that. Just don't want to see you- or anyone- getting so close to the cliff, there," He said, motioning toward the steep edge. "Heights give me the willies," He said, warmth seeping back into his voice, though he shuddered his shoulders for added effect. "What's your name?"

He seemed nice enough, but unfortunately for him, Kiwi wasn't the most reasonable of pups even on a good day. "I'm fine," she declared, shoulders bristling in a warning that she didn't want him any closer. "An I can't tell you cuz I don't know you." She lifted her head and nodded, as if confirming her own decision. She knew how she was supposed to treat strangers!
She did creep a short distance more away from the cliff though, but kept the distance between them the same.

Good lord. A stubborn one. It was just like dealing with a young Niamh- headstrong and perhaps a bit sassy too. But at least he'd had practice dealing with this kind of creature before- two of them, technically, as Ambrose hadn't been easy to handle either. He breathed a small sigh of relief as the girl stepped a bit away from the edge, but she didn't want to go anywhere near him. Seeing this, he moved slowly to the side, allowing her to move further away from the cliff's edge is she wanted to, so that eventually, he could take her place and put himself between her and the drop.
He shrugged at her comment. "I told you; I'm Bruges. But you're right, you know- you have to be smart around strangers." He said. "I bet your parents taught you that, eh?" He asked.

Of course she was right. She didn't need him to tell her that, and she frowned as he continued to talk. Nope. She didn't like him. She'd pretty much decided that, and once Kiwi did, it took quite a bit to change her mind. Nigh on impossible really.
"I know cuz I do", she threw back, then stuck her little tongue out. So there. "Now go away." She finished, demanding with a confidence that was completely unfounded. But she had been here first, and even if it wasn't hers to claim, she was gonna try.

Bruges had to try not to laugh at the girl's statement. She had some lip on her, that was for sure- and an iron will that he assumed was probably the bane of her parents' existance. As little as she was, she was one heck of a force to be reckoned with- and Bruges pitied any wolf who dared to try and reckon with this little one. She clearly had other plans. She tried to shoo him away, but it wasn't going to be that easy. Instead, he sat down.
She shrugged one shoulder, and pricked his ears. "This is neutral territory." He informed her. "I assume you have a pack somewhere- and I definitely wouldn't be welcome there- but you can't kick a lone wolf out of neutral territory...If anything, I have more claim to this land than you do," He said. There was some logic to his viewpoint- but he wanted to see what she'd do when challenged.

"I found it. Finders keepers." That was not at all how it worked, and she worked through it on some level. If she really wanted to force him away, she'd need to be bigger. She wasn't bigger. "But I guess you can stay." She finally allowed, somewhat peevishly. She wanted to explore and he was crampin her style. She didn't need someone watching!
"My moms would definitely bite you if you came." Kiwi had no doubts he wouldn't be welcome anywhere near the pack. Of course, that wasn't necessarily true - wolves joined all the time. But to Kiwi, strangers and pack were two vastly different concepts and did not mesh.

Bruges snickered slightly when Kiwi tried to apply finder's law to wherever it was that they were. He was willing to play along, though, at least a bit- seeing as she'd declared that he could say. "What would you call this place if it was yours?" He asked. "Someday you could claim it. Start your own pack, be your own boss. I bet you'd be good at that," He said, trying to preen her ego a bit- as it seemed she likely did that for herself enough.
He was lightly surprised to hear that she pluralized the form of Mom, and he thought to ask- but decided against it. Was she really being raised by two female wolves? In retrospect....It sort of made sense. Two females certainly would end up raising a pup who was as independent and fierce as this one. Not to mention the moodiness...But that was merely Bruges' mild sexism talking. He shook his head. "Yeah, I wouldn't want to mess with them." He said. "I'm smart enough to know not to tick off a couple of Moms."

Ooooh what would she call it? She didn't want to warm up to the stranger, but he was stroking her ego, and with Kiwi that was a surefire way to at least get her talking.
"Bigfall," she said resolutely, liking the way it felt saying it and how it perfectly described the place. She didn't know what a canyon was, though later when she described the place, she'd likely find out.
Now that that was decided, she took a few more snaps at the lightning bugs that flitted around her as he continued. It was good he was apparently smart enough to know her moms were scary af.

Idly, the girl settled on a name for the canyon, one that suited it fairly well even though it was a titch on the morbid side. Obviously this girl was more the sort of...Rough around the edges kind. The kind that Bruges would likely have no interest in, when she matured. This was the kind of pup that took effort to please, and she'd likely grow up into an adult woman who was just as hard- if not harder- to please than she already was. High maintenance, high risk. He chuckled, and nodded. "Good name." He admitted.
She didn't seem too interested in him, though, and there was only so much Bruges could tolerate when it came to having conversations with wolves who weren't curious about him. "Well, kiddo, I'm probably gonna hit the dusty trail. You make sure you get home safe now, eh?" He asked, assuming that she'd manage fine on her own. She wasn't his responsibility, and Bruges wasn't about to go escorting puppies home unless it could do him some good in return.

Oh good, he was leaving. She nodded, though the look was clear with a 'duh, of course she would'. Because he didn't know home anyway so who was he to tell her what to do? Pfft. Adults.
She didn't even bother with much of a goodbye, though she did wave when he was turned and a ways off. It wouldn't be until darkness fell that she began regretting letting him leave, and she would spend one terrible, frightened night psyching herself up before morning brought the sun once more.
