Ugh. The beach.
Where was civilization? There wasn't nothin' here! There was only sand far as her eye could see — well, sand and debris; dried up old trees, branches tangled in seaweed, everything in the process of being stripped clean of its bark. Nothing to denote a crew settlin' anywhere.
Farren kept to the intermediate section of the beach, keeping well clear of the tide but also below the band of discarded shells. Head down, truffle-piggin' it along the waste-line where she hoped to find a crab or two. It was unlikely, but what the heck was a wench to do fer food?

Every so often, he left the oppressive darkness of the woods. Not that he felt he deserved the light—but that he worried he'd be crushed under the combined weight of the gloom and his own intrusive thoughts.
Yet, out here, he could see the mountains—and visualize all his failures.
Hex felt his breath coming short, panic setting in, and was about to dart back into cover when he saw the thin pale figure trawling the beach. He stepped sideways once, twice, then moved toward her with quick but uncertain steps, unsure of why he bothered.
His nostrils flared, seeking her scent. She had a slight tang of the woods, too—and recent at that. He gave her a chuff over the wind, coming close enough for speech, but—
Still far enough for any reservations.

Whatcha doin'?the shadow asked her, curiosity getting the better of him.

The approach of a shadow didn't register over the sound of her snuffles and grunts, not until the stranger spoke and Farren was startled. The finely enmeshed silver-and-cream of her neck furs puffed immediately, then as she realized it was just a boy (and a thin one at that), any apprehension evaporated.
A wave of her tail welcomed his company. Smiling in a coy way, she answered,

Breakfast. You hungry too?He looked young but not too young for her attention.

He moved forward at her gesture, and closer still at the query.
Hex pointed his muzzle toward the trail along the sand left by her questing muzzle, brow furrowed in query.
His stomach rumbled at the prospect of food. Even hunting with his new Murkwood crew, he was not satisfied—Hex was a growing boy, after all, and desperate for any morsel he could find.
I could eat,he replied with a shrug.

Is there stuff underneath the beach?he asked.
I've never lived by the sea before.
