At some point the darkness he existed in had changed, but Earp hardly noticed the difference. The empty dark still squirmed into writhing bluish shapes which he watched often, head bobbing. He was aware of the new sensation of opening his eyes, blinking, and the dry discomfort that sometimes came when he forgot to blink for too long. His eyesight was poor, however, and his living space quite dim. Earp might have been more perturbed, but everyone knows that infants are notoriously bad at paying PG&E on time.
Eventually he did start to see things. Real things, this time! Had he known the difference at all, he would have been very proud. He had parsed out the pale figure of the woman he would never truly know as his mother in the scant light. It took some time to sort out the features of her, but eventually his eyes found her face.
He looked directly at it and started to scream in terror.

In the weeks she had taken care of Earp, she had come to a conclusion.
She rather did not like children.
It was only for her small gods she did this, she reminded herself as the gape mouth thing screamed in her face. She raised a lip, staring down her muzzle at the boy.
May he never know her loins spawned him, she cursed into the cavernous space of her mind, mulish and angry and everything in between.

Yes yes, my face is scary, you may shut up now.She mullishly spoke to the boy, rolling her eyes and turning her focus across the dim space she’d chosen. Lonesome Dove had become something of an angry recluse, and she blamed this on the boy.

Thats enough, boy. You will attract other things. Bigger. One piercing eye found the black-marked face of her son.
Theres always something bigger, Earp. I want you to forever remember that.
