The grief Rannoch felt was overwhelming.

He laid in the mouth of the den with his head resting on his forelimbs and gaze set in the distance. Since the altercation at the borders had been resolved, Rannoch had opted to consider everything that had happened in solitude. He needed time to reflect, and he allowed himself that time.

Although Rannoch knew there was nothing he could do to change what had happened, he thought of what he could do differently, and how he could be more successful in the future. Rannoch knew that despite all this planning, he had disappointed @Liffey— that was the worst, to Rannoch. They had not spoken since the group had dispersed, and he had no idea what she would say now that they were alone.
a crime so old as the sky and bone
he came untied, solid as a stone
all is almost lost and it starts to show
