@Lafayette;

her soul, her self. They existed as one. Slowly Lucette had learned to follow his example, to thrive as he did if only through imitation. She ate when he ate. She played when he played. Lucette found little worthy of her attention unless Lafayette deemed it so.

But something had shifted. On this afternoon, Lucette took initiative as she had not before. She meant to probe the world beyond their den — but she didn't want to do it without her twin. She nudged him, whining softly to catch his attention. Then she took two backward steps toward the den mouth, glancing over her shoulder and back at her brother. Let's go.

something had blossomed within his twin sister.

there was an energy in her like never before, and at her nudge, he roused. the outside of the den beckoned, a siren song to youngsters.

lafayette murmured gently in assent and trundled forward, making sure he took step by step alongside lucette.

they would break from darkness into light together—or not at all.

Her soul's companion, ever at her side. Lucette paused only once, briefly where the light first cut through the shadows, to meet Lafayette's eyes. Together, into the world.

She stepped past the den's threshold, head tilting back, eyes half-closed as she took in the feeling of sunlight soaking into her fur. Then a bird shrieked overhead, startling her. Lucette felt as much as heard the wet slap that followed, somewhere near her paws, as the bird added its own welcome to the world. There was a warning in it, too; more than most people received, though unfortunately it was lost on Lucette. Get ready for a lot more shit.

it was warm and wild out here; the green that glinted off lucette's gaze grew exponentially, rising and swelling into the grass and trees and brush that met their entrance into the wider world.

he snuffled once, taking in pollen, and then raised his little muzzle, taking in the variety of scents. lowered it to the ground, and—

something wet and warm greeted the crown of his head, spilling down the bridge of his nose. he squinched his eyes shut and wretched slightly at the putrid smell. lafayette stumbled sideways and shook himself, sending flecks of white crap flying into the air.

ugghhh, he remarked wordlessly, and began to whimper at the awfulness of it.
