Had Birk really wanted to make friends with this Larus-guy, he would have felt a little disheartened by the other's total lack of detecting jokes, when they were thrown his way, and act appropriately. Quite the contrary - he made a bet with himself, how long would it take, before his packmate would actually get a hint of humor. Odds did not seem very likely, because at this moment it seemed like throwing stones against a concrete wall and hope that something would happen.
