Another bout of bitter air descended from the mountain top as the sun set, streaking the skies with clouds and a cascade of colors that were far warmer than the air. It was quite a sight to take in for Dirge, who after a reasonable delay, had ventured upward once again. He had worn out the vistas of forest and stone and perhaps against his better judgment decided the views from on high would be worth the risk. They had been thus far but with nightfall encroaching he had the feeling he would be staying out and up for the night.

Little matter he thought, testing that icy wind with narrowed eyes. There were far worse places to be and truthfully he knew this particular stretch of crag to house a windbreak or two. Recent turmoil at the borders seemed to have loosened the hold of numbers, or at least that was the best he could figure. Rannoch's departure had seemed out of the blue to him, as did the others. He had yet to encounter @Hydra to glean such information but it had been crystal clear to him that whatever had happened had not gone well.

The sun dipped out from beneath a long, ragged tendril of cloud; his narrowed gaze turned briefly into a squint until he had changed his viewpoint. While the vast valleys before him were dotted with forestry and snow, he did not miss the opportunity to trace snippets of winding creeks with his gaze until the earth swallowed them whole once more. The day had been dull, at least from where he sat now, and he did not ponder what night would bring. It would either be quiet or not, and the matter of company was another question altogether.

Gannet
Lone Wolves

He hadn't intended to climb, but the day was nice, and his energy such that he felt the need for the exercise. His fall had caused a sore and stiffness in both his injured leg and his shoulder, but nothing that couldn't be walked off. So he determined to take it slow.

As he made his way up, picking the least resistant paths and the most cautiously smooth ways, he took most of the afternoon, unaware that another had had the same thought as he. He didn't think about the descent; once he started, a kind of peace came over him, and he continued to climb, hopping and walking as best he could up and up. He could feel how much he'd improved over the last few weeks of work, and it heartened him even moreso.

Unaware of Dirge only a short distance up, Gannet stopped to admire the view as the sun was sinking. Experimentally, he gave a small call; not of summoning or information, just one of happiness. He'd finally seen a piece of the mountain, as he'd wanted to since he first came upon it.

It had been a long day of relative solitude and for a change this did not bother him. Not that he had much to complain about in the first place; for all things considered Dirge was content with almost everything. The weather had been a pain, sure, but with the safety of a well worn in pack territory to house him he never had far to go if he desired to be out of the elements. Even the view here quelled a little of the itching wanderlust, though he would have reasoned it tempered his patience for spring to be in full swing soon.

There he did not dwell long, for a happy little call punctuated the quiet ambience. Briefly a corner of his mouth turned upwards toward a smile but was cut crisp as he responded with one of his own. He didn't recognize the caller, but there were still a few faces that were nothing more than passing smatterings in his recollection. Perhaps they'd join him, but if not he was just as content to mind himself for now.

sorry for the wait

no worries, I'm a relaxed pace poster :)

To Gannet's surprise, and great pleasure, another voice resounded nearby in answer. As his own notes faded alongside it, he attempted to track the sound to its source, coming eventually on a wolf he had only met in passing and never actually spoken to.

He approached benignly, but kept his posture low, knowing his place as omega might be important to some. He did not worry so much with Hydra or Dune; they knew him well enough to know he would never take liberties. But with all others he was the portrait of submission. He took the other male's scent experimentally, and waited to see if he would kick off the greetings.

The wolf that appeared slinking he barely knew; their interactions were far and few inbetween, and though Dirge knew how his existence to Moonspear began he did not have a name to place immediately to the face. So in lieu of a greeting by name he offered a wave of his tail, an extension that he could be joined if Gannet wished it so. Conversation, he thought, would surely aid it as well.

"You're becoming quite the climber," seemed a fair opener as his gaze ventured a look to the lame limb. "These slopes can be tricky at best even in the right conditions." Winter had barred Dirge from venturing too high and truthfully, he had stuck to where others dared to go than forge his own path on snowy ledges. He was no mountain goat, though the goats privy to Moonspear cared not where proper paths lay.

my favorite sort then! :D

The tail wag was just the signal Gannet was looking for. Instantly he smiled, and his stance lightened up a bit, not so concerned with avoiding agression. Since he had started moving, his encounters with most of the mountain had improved considerably. Some still met him with outright hostility or cold indifference (Lyra). But to most he was becoming known, happily.

"It's good practice," he responded, taking a seat lightly on the cold ground and looking at Dirge. "Why are you up?" He was curious what he had interrupted the other wolf while doing.

Good practice. Dirge nodded to that; it probably was. What better a way to strengthen oneself than scaling a mountain? He thought he could think of a thing or two but nothing immediately sprang to mind, and then there was the matter of a question to answer.

"Taking in the views of course," he replied, gesturing out to the swath of land seen from their location. "There's plenty of it to be seen from here, amd it gives me ideas where to go next. Never know where those elk could be hiding." And they could never really know where his mental compass would direct him next.

A nice, upfront answer, if a little confusing. Where to go next? "You're leaving?" He asked quizzically, wondering why if he was. Was he going like Liffey and the rest had? Or was he simply going exploring? The latter and the elk made sense, and Gannet filed that bit away for future use. Large game would be easier to spot from on high like this.
