It was great being home again, even though Nikai was sad to have had to say good bye to @Steph right after she had returned to his life. He was glad to have caught up with her though, and he could see that she too was sad to have to say good-bye to him. But he understood the need to go sometimes because he had felt it too. Even though he was back now Nikai knew he would unlikely live out the rest of his days staying only here, and he imagined the same went for many other wolves. Not everyone was like Valette, and that was perfectly fine.
As Nikai trotted -- more or less, considering his missing leg -- over a hill a little past noon, he caught sight of the herd of bison. He felt his heart lurch to his throat even though the bison weren't doing anything in particular. There was still a remnant of fear and pain there, he realised only then as he looked at the majestic creatures searching for grass in the snow, scratching at the surface to find the food below. It'd been during a hunt for bison that he had lost his leg's use, after all, so he understood like no other how risky hunting them was. One moment of not paying attention well enough could cost you dearly.
