It startles him a little when Evergreen speaks, and he finds himself confused by the words. He pauses, gaze finally settling on the other. Why? His voice is soft, equal parts confusion and concern. He can't be certain whether Evergreen is apologizing for the loss of his family that had, in the end, been his own decision — or something that had happened before he arrived, something that had caused the tension that had gripped Winterbourne's reunion with his sister from the first moment.
Winterbourne's voice is low and raspy due to a throat injury during his childhood, and it can sometimes be difficult to understand him.
