She had been craddled in love, tightly held in a isolating bubble and blinded by affection.
She had spent her life dancing in her dreams, drunk on her parent's love and her siblings' company. She was just a happy girl, ecstatic to grow out of her shell and trade the lazy afternoons for hours of learning. She was a blossoming flower that had been plucked out of the dirt far to early.

Everything had happened way to early.
The trip from Swiftcurrent to Duskfire, the lynx's strike, her father's departure and mother's collapse. Maera had seen the tears and had heard the muffled sobs she had tried to hide at night, she had seen the worst part of it -- or so she had thought.

No one had told her that the worst was just beginning.
Thinking that the rollercoaster ride was over, she had strapped herself off the cart, without knowing that there was just a loop up ahead. When the tragic news of another missing face reached her ears, it was too late. She was already falling. Falling hard and fast.

Within seconds, the middle child collapsed onto herself, she plummeted against the ground whilst engulfed by the very flames of hell. Her tragic crash and burn had not only shattered the small idea of famlily she had left but it had also brought the weight of being alone onto the four-month old's shoulders.

She allowed the coldness of the forest floor to seep into her body, she had no energy to fight against it. She was covered in flames but freezing on the inside, coiled up on the floor hoping to melt into the Earth's interior and disappear from the peering eyes of the clouds and those who might hear her laments.

"mum" she whispered into the floor, her shivering lips pressing against the rough dirt beneath her.
